"Mommy!" Ellis screamed when Alex lifted her off the bed
"What's going on?" Bailey ran inside
"Her heartbeat dropped!" Alex told them and got worried over his friend
"Kids-" Meredith suddenly muttered
"We got them" Alex nodded and turned around, seeing Ellis was hiding on the couch
"Take her, I'll run those tests" Bailey nodded at him
Alex watched as they wheeled Meredith out of the room before he turned to face Ellis
"Hi sweetie, come with me" He tried to reach out for her but the little girl seemed terrified of what was happening around her
"No! Mommy! I want mommy! Mommy can't die!" Ellis cried
"The doctors are taking care of her, El. Let's go see your siblings" Alex kept trying
"No! Mommy's gone and will never come back!" She kept hysterically screaming so Alex lifted her in his arms despite her kicking to get out of his grip. He held her tight in her arms so she could calm down but was also safe
"What's going on? Ellie, I can hear you scream from down the hallway.." Amelia ran inside
"Mommy left!" The girl whimpered
Alex saw Amelia looking at him, pleading with her eyes for him to tell this wasn't true and was a misunderstanding
"Mommy's heart rate dropped, they are just doing some tests. She will be back in a bit, Ellie. I promise" He held her tight and saw Amelia relaxing again
...
Alex had been waiting with Ellis for a while now. Maggie and Winston had offered to take her home as they were already watching Zola and Bailey but Ellis refused to leave Alex and after everything that had happened he couldn't bare to leave the girl either
"When's mama ready?" She quietly asked as she was half asleep in Alex' arms
"She'll be ready soon" He rubbed her back and started worrying as well, it was taking a while now
"Alex!" Teddy ran towards them
"Please tell me everything's okay!" Alex breathed
"She's okay, we administered some meds and we want to keep her monitored for a while but she's too unstable to be discharged" Teddy explained
"T-Thats okay" He breathed and even teared up. He was so happy she would be okay
"Mommy's okay?" Ellis quietly asked
"Your mommy is okay" Teddy smiled and softly rubbed Ellis' upper arm
"Can we go see mommy?" She asked Alex
"Teddy?" He asked the blonde doctor
"Yeah. But she needs her rest" Teddy sighed. She knew Meredith pushed herself too much for her kids but not seeing them would make things even worse
"Come on, quick!" Ellis giggled in Alex' arms despite the little girl being completely exhausted after the intense and long day they had had
"Your mommy might look a little scary as we have some machines watching her but I promise it will be all okay" Teddy tried to assure the little girl
"Kay" Ellis quietly nodded her tiny head, her blonde hair completely tangled from cuddling in Alex' arms the past hours
"Maybe you and your mom can take a nap together, would you like that?" Alex asked as he started to make his way over to Meredith's hospital room. He smiled as he saw her asleep in the bed and walked closer
"Mommy" Ellis smiled
"Let's lay you down, princess" Alex smiled and helped the girl lay down next to her mother, tucking both of them in
...
Meredith woke up and felt slightly disoriented. She couldn't remember what had happened since she heard people scream so she felt relieved to see Alex sitting on the chair next to her bed
"Hi. I'm so happy to see you awake" Alex whispered, his voice cracking
"What happened?" Meredith frowned as she felt still exhausted
"Your heart rate dropped. You're okay now. You can't do this again. You really can't" Alex' voice cracked
"Sorry" Meredith muttered and rubbed her daughter's back
"Mama?" Ellis whispered as she was half waking up
"I'm here, go back to sleep. Mommy loves you" Meredith whispered and kissed Ellis' head "And Zola loves you, Bailey loves you.. Daddy.. he loves you. So many people love you" Meredith whispered. It was a small habit she had when she needed to calm Ellis down as the girl has some anxiety about several things so Meredith wanted to assure her she would always have her family
"Uncle Alex loves you" Alex quietly added
"Thanks Alex for being here and for watching the kids. I really appreciate it" Meredith looked him straight in his eyes
"I love you, Mer. You're like my sister and I just want to take care of my family" He held her hand in his own "I want waffle sundays once you're home and in remission. We need to celebrate" He said sternly "So we need waffle sundays, with Maggie, Winson, Amelia and Kai and the kids.. the whole family"
"Do I have to help make the waffles?" Meredith asked after a moment of silence
"It's my thing. Stay out of the kitchen" Alex laughed softly "Now try to close your eyes so you can sleep. I'm gonna get installed on the other bed but I'll be here the whole night, Maggie and Winston keep watching Zola and Bailey" He assured Meredith
"Wanna see them" Meredith muttered
"First thing in the morning if you feel up to it" Alex promised
"First thing in the morning no matter what!" She said sternly. She sounded weak but her kids were her priorities
"Stubborn woman" Alex laughed and covered her with an extra blanket before pulling the bed closer again and climbing in. He had to admit he was mostly checking the monitors to be sure she was okay but eventually he finally started drifting off despite the soft snores from Meredith and Ellis
