MABEL WAS WOKEN by Cal early the next morning. She sat at the kitchen table, eating her breakfast. Jessica had dressed her in a purple sweater and button up jeans. Jess set a black backpack with yellow stars on it on the floor next to Mabel.

"This used to be Lyla's," Jess smiled, stroking Mabel's now shoulder-length hair. Mabel brought her plate to the sink and grabbed the backpack, putting it on. The family walked out the front door and piled into the car.

It was about a ten minute drive to the school. Cal was left in the car and Jess and Mabel got out, walking into the loud schoolyard. Mabel reached for Jess's hand, holding it as they walked inside. Jess took Mabel into a room and sat down at a desk with a bald man behind it.

"Hello. You must be Mabel," the man smiled. "Hi," Mabel muttered. "Here is your schedule and locker combination. I gave you the same schedule as Michael Wheeler, you'll meet him in your homeroom and he'll help you to your lessons."

Jess smiled as she talked with the man as Mabel looked down at the confusing words on the paper the man gave her. She assumed he was the principal of the school Jess told her about.

"I'm gonna leave now. You're okay, Mabel," Jess reassured the young girl. Mabel nodded slowly. "I'll bring you to your homeroom," he stood up and led both of them out. Jess walked the other way, out of the school.

Mabel was lead into a classroom full of students. "Mr. Clarke, your new student," the principal pushed Mabel lightly into the classroom. Whispers emerged around her as she peered up at the tall man. "Mabel Miller. So nice to meet you," Mr. Clarke smiled.

"Class. Our newest addition, Mabel," he put his hand on Mabel's shoulder. "You can go sit in the back over there," he told her. She walked over to the desk and sat down, setting her bag on the ground like everyone else did.

She looked up to find four boys staring bullets into her. She furrowed her eyebrows and slouched down into the seat. They all turned around and started whispering. "Is that the girl you have to show around, Mike? She's so hot," the curly haired one whispered.

Mabel pretended to not hear them as Mr. Clarke gave her a large textbook. "Yeah, that's her," the boy who was called Mike nodded. Mabel opened the textbook and acted as if she wasn't eavesdropping.

"Should I say hi?" Mike whispered to his group of friends. "No, wait until after class, dude," the black boy told Mike. "Okay, class. Homeroom is now done. Everybody turn your textbooks to page 356 and focus," Mr. Clarke clapped his hands.

About forty minutes later, a loud riiiiiing! noise made Mabel almost jump out of her seat. Everyone scampered to grab their items and leave the class so Mabel followed them. She picked her bag off the ground, slinging it over her right shoulder when she felt a tap on her left shoulder.

She turned around, facing the same boy — Mike — and his three friends. "Hey, I'm Mike Wheeler. Did Mr. E tell you that I'm supposed to show you around and stuff?" Mike introduced himself. Mabel nodded, clutching onto her backpack tighter. She was not at all ready for real interactions with normal kids.

"These are my friends. Lucas, Dustin and Will," Mike pointed at the three boys standing behind him. Mabel smiled at them, to which they returned. "Let me take you to math. I have to tell you, though. Mrs. Devlin is a real bitch," Mike told her as he lead her out of Mr. Clarke's classroom.

Mabel giggled as she always did when she heard swear words. It made her miss her sisters even more. Every little thing reminded her of them more and more. She shook off the sadness as Mike said goodbye to his three friends and took Mabel into a different room.

IT WAS NOW "horror time" — as Mike called it. After two classes with Wheeler, Mabel was now in the scariest room of the school. It was loud and everyone in it seemed obnoxious. Mike took Mabel to the table where him and his friends sat.

"Mabel's sitting with us. That cool?" Mike asked, plopping his bag down on a seat. Lucas rolled his eyes. Dustin nodded but he was focused on eating. "Yeah, sure," Will beamed up at the taller girl, his eyes sparkling. She sat in between Mike and Will, since they seemed the nicest.

"Aren't you gonna get something to eat?" Dustin asked with mouth full of food. Mabel turned around and stared at the ridiculously long lunch line. She turned back to the table and shook her head, opening her backpack and taking out an apple she saved from this morning's breakfast.

"Do you talk?" Lucas asked. Mabel nodded slowly. "Yes?" she meant for the word to come out as a statement, but it was more of an question. "Why don't you do it more often? It suits you," Mike smiled.

She looked at the table, trying to make up an excuse but was interrupted by taunting laughs coming their way. "Hey, freaks. Who's your new girlfriend?" A boy walked up to the table. Mabel looked up at them and immediately sensed something was wrong.

"Jesus. What do you want, Troy?" Mike groaned. "Just wanted to know who this pretty little lady is," the boy — now known as Troy — smirked at Mabel. "This is Mabel. She's new," Will muttered. "Wow! Has the fairy finally gotten a girl? I never thought the day would've come," Troy laughed, elbowing his minion behind him.

Troy picked up Dustin's untouched milk, looking like he was gonna open it and pour it on someone. Mabel thought quickly. She could use her powers without anyone being able to tell it was her.

She took a deep breath as she narrowed her eyes. Her telekineses made Troy freeze in place, not being able to open the milk. She lightly threw her head to the side, tossing the milk across the cafeteria directly into a trashcan.

"What?! What did you freaks do to me?!" Troy yelled as people started to crowd around him, laughing. Mabel threw an invisible force at him, sending him back onto the floor. He quickly got up, running his finger over his bloody lip.

He stared in horror at the blood on his finger and ran out of the cafeteria for his life. "How the hell did that happen?!" Dustin turned back to his friends, amazed. "That was weird. Almost like someone has powers and used them on him," Will laughed.

"Mabel. Your nose is bleeding," Mike picked up a napkin and tried to wipe the blood off Mabel's face. "Oh. Thank you," she smiled. "Do you just get random nosebleeds like that?" he asked. Mabel nodded. "Allergies," she giggled as she took a bite of her apple.
