‘Roger!’ The bright word flashed in front of Roger as he ran through them, ignoring Sly’s attempts to stop him. ‘Roger, please!’

Panting, Sly bent over himself. Since when did Roger get so fast? Taking a deep breath, Sly began thinking. He turned, taking a different root until he eventually got to the familiar classroom. He stepped closer through the dusty room, kneeling in front of Roger.

‘Roger?’ Lowering the brightness of the words, Sly sat beside Roger. ‘Please talk to me.’

“I’m sorry,” Roger whispered, sounding broken. He covered his head, shaking fearfully. “I’m sorry.”

‘You have nothing to apologise for. Now talk to me. Why did you run away?’

“Didn’t you hear Justin and Kevin?”

‘I did but… I don’t understand why that would make you run away.’

“Of course, you don’t! You don’t understand any of this!” Roger spun, glaring at Sly before freezing.

Sly had flinched away.

Curling in on himself, Roger hung his head lower. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It’s not your fault.”

Sly chewed on his lip, laying his head on Roger’s shoulder. ‘I’m sorry that I don’t understand. I’ve tried everything to understand but I don’t. I want to protect you like I want to protect everyone. I care about you, I do but…’

“I’m not special to you.”

Blinking, Sly bit his lip. ‘You are special to me but… not in the way that I’m special to you.’

Roger sighed heavily, chuckling hollowly. “I know. I know that. I knew that the second we first brought up love back in September.”

‘I’m sorry.’

“Don’t. Please don’t apologise. No one should feel at fault for not liking someone.” Roger leaned back, smiling at Sly though the tears fell from his eyes. “Especially not you.”

Sly frowned, wiping away Roger’s tears. ‘But, something must be wrong with me.’ Before Roger could say anything, Sly dropped his arms, blinking back his tears. ‘I don’t like anyone like that. Everyone in our year likes someone but I don’t. There must be something wrong with me. What if I never like someone the way you people do and… and I end up alone.’

Roger knew Sly’s fear. He knew Sly’s greatest fear was to end up alone, unable to die as everyone around him left. Tackling Sly into a hug, Roger held onto Sly, letting him melt into the hug. His glamour dropped, making it easy for him to fit under Roger’s chin. “There is nothing wrong with you. I promise nothing is wrong with you.” Running his hands through Sly’s hair, Roger settled. “You won’t be alone either. You’ll never be alone. Justin, Kevin, Wayne, Draco and Hermione and all your family. They won’t let you be alone.”

Sly sniffled, smiling as he sighed into the comfort. “Promise?

“Promise,” Roger repeated, knowing what Sly was saying.

“Promise you’ll never leave me,” Sly asked again, leaning away from Roger to look him in the eyes.

Roger paused, his eyes flickering for a second before a soft, sad smile came to his face. “I promise,” he repeated in the old tongue, making Sly grin. Roger let Sly rest against him, frowning. He hated lying to Sly.

Returning to the dorm, Roger walked in, finding Kevin alone. “Roger! Sly! You’re back!” Kevin hopped up, a hopeful glint in his eyes. “Are you okay?”

Roger nodded. “We’re okay.”

Kevin sighed in relief. Patting their soldiers. “I’m glad.”

‘Where’s Justin?’ Sly popped his head around Roger’s side, making Kevin grin.

“He’s repenting.”

A muffled voice echoed from the walls, making Roger and Sly share a look. ‘Has Wayne come back yet.’

“No, he’s still at practice.” Kevin huffed in annoyance.

“Does Wayne have a date yet?” Roger sat down, hoping to get the attention away from him.

“Nope and if he doesn’t hurry up, he won’t have one at all.”

‘None of us will,’ Sly stated simply, falling onto his bed.

Kevin smiled softly, nodding.

“Kevin!” Bursting through the door, the Hufflepuff Quidditch captain panted. “Come quickly, Wayne got hurt!”

Kevin paled, jumping up and spinning. The captain grabbed him, pulling him from the room as the rest followed behind quickly.

Rushing down the steps, the captain pulled Kevin onto the field. Standing completely unharmed, Wayne blushed. Behind him, different members of the team held up little signs spelling out, ‘Kevin, will you go to the ball with me?’

Kevin stared in shock, his heart skipping. “Wayne?”

Wayne bit his cheek, taking a deep breath. “I know it’s cheesy, but I didn’t make this plan. My captain decided I was being too cowardly, so became my wingman. I know this poem sucks but it's the best it can be. So please look past my lame attempt, and go to the ball with me?”

Kevin paused, gulping as Wayne began fidgeting. “I’ll say yes on one condition.”

Wayne nodded, shaking in anticipation as Kevin walked closer. “Yes?”

“Never write a poem again,” Kevin announced as Wayne sighed with a nod.

“Oh hell yeah. That was the worst six hours of my life.”

“It took you six hours to write that?” Wayne nodded shyly as Kevin snorted. “Oh my god, you’re a terrible writer. It’s very good, I couldn't care less.” Kevin stepped closer, brushing his fingers against Wayne’s cheek. “Can I kiss you?”

Wayne nodded excitedly, more nervous than he could admit. Kevin leaned forward, gently fluttering his eyes close. Wayne met him, hesitantly kissing back. The team cheered, clapping their hands together.

Kevin snorted once he pulled away. “You’re a terrible kisser.”

Blushing harder, Wayne grumbled. “Shut up.”

“Don’t worry. I can teach you.” Kevin leaned in for another kiss, stopping just before Wayne and letting him close the distance. Short and chase, but it made them happy.

‘Right, Roger, I really don’t get this. You want to do that stuff? Weird.’

Roger chuckled at Sly’s comment, ruffling his hair. “Some of us want to kiss and have boyfriends, others want to break into the library at 3 in the morning. We’re all different.”

‘It’s still weird.’

Roger rolled his eyes with a light laugh. Turning away. “Let’s go back, I’m tired.”

Sly nodded. ‘Do you think I’m still expected to go with someone to the ball?’

“Unless you plan on dancing alone.”

‘I can do that. Maybe I’ll dance with Ama or Naos’

“Naos?”

‘My dragon. I kept her.’

“Of course you did.”

‘What?! She’s cute!’

“Help!” Struggling against the bindings, Justin called out for Roger and Sly, dangling from outside the building, the gag that had kept him quiet having fallen to the ground.

Roger and Sly shared a look before closing the window and continuing.
