A/N: I am so sorry for that cliffhanger (but, not really :P)
Please don't be mad at me. I hope this chapter will make up for the gut punch that the last chapter ended on!
Chapter 18
Darkness. Darkness all around her. Emma couldn't tell if her eyes were open or closed. She didn't know how long she was standing there, or where she was. Everything was dark and silent.
"Emma..." She heard a voice call. She couldn't tell if she heard that with her ears, or if the voice was in her head. She tried to turn towards the source of the voice, but found she couldn't tell what direction it was coming from.
"Regina..." she called out, hoping wherever Regina was, she could hear her.
She couldn't tell how much time had passed, or if time was even moving, before the world around her came into focus. She was standing in the middle of a forest. She didn't recognize it as being the forest in Storybrooke, but it somehow felt familiar. It was still dark, but not a darkness void of light. A darkness of night. The full moon shone above, lighting the forest around her.
That's when she saw her, standing a few yards away, the light of the full moon illuminating her.
Regina.
"Emma!!" Regina called, running towards her.
"Regina!" Emma yelled, running towards Regina, nearly colliding with her, as they raced towards each other. Their arms were instantly around each other, holding each other impossibly tight under the moonlight. "Where are we?" Emma asked.
"I don't know. It looks like a forest, but not Storybrooke." Regina said, holding Emma tighter, as if afraid she'll disappear if she let her go.
"Yes, I gathered that. The question is really, why? Why are we here?" Emma said, pulling away from Regina slightly. "Regina, we died."
"I am well aware of that, dear." Regina said, her voice sad, as she ran her fingers through Emma's hair. "And I don't have any idea why we are here."
That's when they heard the sound of a baby crying nearby. They ran towards the sound of the crying baby, discovering the source a few moments later. Laying on the ground, was a small baby, no more than two or three months old, wrapped in a white blanket. Two Wolves stood near the baby, their posture indicating a defensive stance. They were protecting the baby. Emma and Regina inched closer, but the Wolves didn't even flinch. It was almost like they weren't there.
"I don't think they can see us." Regina whispered, as they walked closer to the crying baby, the Wolves never acknowledging their presence. Emma took the final step closer as her breath hitched in chest.
"Regina...that's me. That baby...is me." Emma pointed to the baby wrapped in the blanket.
"How do you know?" Regina asked, looking down at the crying baby.
"That's my blanket! The one I was found wrapped in. It was my most treasured possession when I was growing up, because it was the only thing that was ever truly mine." Emma explained, her eyes filling with tears as she remembered her blanket. "I lost it after my first shift, when I was forced to run away from the foster home. They must have thrown it away, because I never got it back." They both looked down at the white blanket with the name "Emma" stitched into it with purple thread. Emma reached out to touch the blanket, her hand going straight through it.
"Those must be..."Regina started to say, emotion getting caught in her throat.
"Those must be my parents." Emma whispered, her eyes focused on the two Grey Wolves in front of them. "She's my mother." Emma said, kneeling in front of the light grey Wolf. "She looks exactly like Hope! If I didn't know any better, I would have thought this was Hope." Emma said, suddenly spinning around to face Regina, tears welling in her green and brown eyes. "I have her eyes." Emma said, tears falling down her cheeks.
