Troy was prepared. He was about to meet his end, and he was perfectly fine with that. He had lived way too long, it was time to cross to the other side. This world had nothing left for him. He was done feeding on humans for his needs, he was done sacrificing lives for his, he was done being the creature that lurked in the dark.
He knew his death would not be easy. He had come across Estoban once, he was an evil man. He tortured others for fun, and he held grudges. He would make him pay for giving him a hard time, Troy knew that. He was in for a very torturous night.
“There's still time, you can still hide." Francesca insisted. To her distaste, she had grown quite fond of the longtooth. It was her first real encounter with one, usually she doesn't stop and chat with them. She goes in for the hunt. It's what she was made for, it runs in her blood.
“No, it's alright. I'm done hiding, I'm done with this world. You must understand, I don't belong here anymore. I should have been burning in hell decades ago."
“In hell?"
“Yes. When I was a human, I wasn't very different. I fed on vulnerable girls that, nibbled at their insecurity. I was not a very good person." he said.
“You certainly weren't. Why did you do it?" she asked, sitting beside him.
“I was rich and spoiled. My father was a rich Frenchman, I never starved, and I never appreciated what others did for me." he chuckled, and stared down at his lap. It wasn't a cheerful sound.
“There are some foolish humans that think that being immortal is a gift." he began, “It's a curse. I've watched my loved ones die, every single one of them. I had brothers and sisters, they too have died, and their sons and so on."
“That's hard," she admitted.
“It is, so promise me something,"
“What is it?"
“Next time you come across a vampire, kill it." he squeezed her hand. She cringed, but shrugged it off. He was not that bad. His behavior was bearable.
The clock stroke midnight, and he stood up, “It's time for you to go." he said hurriedly. He picked up the mat covering a secret door that led to the ground beneath the house and she hid in there.
Her father built it years ago, whenever she was afraid, she hid under there. It was a good hiding place, no one would ever look there.
She held her breath. Now, the thought of him dying was settling in, and her heart shattered. He was there when she needed, and he was in this mess because of her. He can't trick her, he could have fled if he wanted to, but he didn't. It was his fault, but he still stayed.
Millions of thoughts bombarded her mind, and she tugged at her hair to ease it out. The guilt was tugging at her chest. Now, there was nothing she could do.
After half an hour of agony, men fled into the house. She looked through the cracks on the floor, and she recognized their pale faces.
Vampires.
They asked him tons of questions, asked him where she was, but he refused to answer and for that he paid the price. He was kicked and punched and stabbed, and she blinked away tears. He didn't deserve this, this was too much even for a longtooth. She held her breath.
They dragged him out, and he groaned in pain. He would suffer a long and painful death, but she couldn't do much. They were too many. Even if she wanted to, even if she had her weapons she was outnumbered.
She shook her head.
A tear slid down her face, and she did not bother to wipe it away. She would miss him.
*
Troy was feeling an excruciating pain. His wounds bled more everytime he was pushed or moved. It would soon be over, he thought. Now that he knew Francesca was safe, he was at ease. He had done his last deed on earth.
“Estoban will make you pay." a nasty looking guard chuckled. Troy looked away. He had almost forgotten, he still had to face Estoban. The ruthless man would give him a hard time. He groaned.
The Supreme as well.
This time, he bit back a cry. He would never show his weak side to these filthy guards. He had pride in him, and he would never falter, no matter what.
Once they arrived, he saw Estoban from a distance. His face was scarred, and one of his eyes covered with excess skin. He looked dreadful, and Troy wondered what had happened to him.
One of the guards kicked him out of the van, and Troy landed on the floor, groaning. His head had hit the ground, and now he was a little disoriented. Estoban approached him, Troy could see his feet, and before he knew it he was kicked square in the face. His back hit the van. The kick made him lose it, because his eyes were rolling to the back of his head.
Estoban gripped his hair, and forced Troy to look at him,“See what you did to my face? I'll do the same to you."
And then, he saw nothing else.
**
His ribs were broken, and the worst thing was they could not be fixed. Once a vampire breaks something, it cannot be repaired. You might as well just die, and that's what's going to happen to him.
“Glad to see you're awake." he heard Estoban say. It was deeper and raspy, which wasn't normal. Estoban was tortured by the Supreme, and he came back to life. It was Troy's conclusion.
“You will meet your end soon, dog, but first you will have to go through my punishment." he spat out. Troy was too weak to react.
Estoban kicked him and slapped him, but Troy did not react. He was completely defenseless, he was dying, he was weak.
He was dragged out of the room, and landed on a hard surface. Looking up, he saw the Supreme staring back at him, amused. His thoughts went back when he lied to Francesca. He had seen them before, but that he will take to the grave now.
“Prepare for execution." Estoban barked out.
Troy's last sight, was a falcon, flying freely across the sky. He watched it dance around, chirping loudly.
He didn't feel the blade, he didn't feel the pain. He was already dead when the black sliced through his neck. His last breath was drawn seconds before he faded away, and nothing was more peaceful...than death.
