Her world stopped moving.Pregnant? It couldn't be.It was impossible. She hadn't done anything in a while, how could that be possible?
"That's impossible."she said.
"Why is that?"he asked her.
"Because I haven't had a partner in years!"she exclaimed,clearly shocked.The doctor raised his brow at her."Then I don't know dear,your symptoms are strange.But,they relate to pregnancy symptoms.I'll have to examine you."he said.
"Sure. No problem,no problem at all."she stuttered out.The topic made her nervous, like she was about to puke of so much anxiety. To make things worst, she was famished. She hoped Dr Vliegstuin was wrong, and that maybe she was just ill.She hoped so.
"When was your last period?"He asked her.
"Three days ago."she answered. He stared at her with wide eyes, and wrote notes on his little pad.She on the other hand felt embarrassed about talking to a male doctor about her menstrual cycle.
She stayed in the room for about thirty minutes, doing all sorts of tests and exams. She couldn't wait to go home.
"The result will be ready in three days, until then Ms White." he said in a friendly way when he was done taking blood exams. He knew he was right,he's never wrong.
*
As Francesca drove home, she began thinking about that hospital involuntarily. It just popped into her brain without her consent. She was worried, her sweaty palms gave it all away.
"Gosh."she mumbled. She wasn't concentrating on the road. She was full of issues, and her superiors were stressing her night and day. There was a new vampire in town,so she had to hunt it down. But she had so many things going on at the moment, including her medical issues. She needed time for herself, but she couldn't tell them that. They'd eat her alive.
When she got home, she prepared another peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She was hungry, even though she had no appetite. Her jaws had no strength in them, she didn't have the energy to chew.
Pregnant?She thought again.
No,maybe...no. she thought strictly.She wasn't and she couldn't be.She wasn't going crazy,she was functioning perfectly fine,just not at the moment.At the moment,she felt crazy.Lightheaded.
She couldn't wait to tear up that envelope and find out what those results meant, but first she had some hunting to do.
She gathered up her equipment and put on her hunting boots.Minutes later, she was in front of the forest. She had everything she needed, hammers, screwdrivers and her most deadly weapon;her wooden bow and arrow. She never missed, not once. That made her proud, would make her father proud too.
She went in,ears and eyes wide open. She was paying attention to every little noise, sounds of animals. No vampire. Her eyes caught every detail, she didn't miss a single leaf. That was what being a vampire hunter was all about, being attentive.
She searched and searched. She felt her limbs swell up but she wouldn't go home until she caught the bastard. It was in her blood, her nature would never allow it.
It was getting dark, and still no sign of it.She was getting cold and frustrated.Where could he be?He wasn't in town, other hunters are there patrolling. They would have called her if they had a sign of the vicious monster.
She was going deep into the forest,a place she had never explored before. She wasn't afraid, she was a brave woman, even though she was facing one of her darkest fears. She was hungry, she hadn't brought any food for herself. But she was there to hunt vampires, not think about food. Her growling stomach didn't help at all.
As she continued, she heard something.A twig? She wasn't quite sure, which annoyed her slightly. She wasn't being attentive, not at all.She groaned internally and sharpened her hearing.
"Come on you little coward, show up!"she whispered.
Silence greeted her.
"Come on!"she mumbled.
Silence.
"Mama's waiting."
Then, there was the noise. The high-pitched noise that bounced off the trees. She saw it's pale skin moving, she charged towards it.
It was running, fast. She had to accelerate to keep up the pace.It was the fastest one she had ever come across. She was struggling, and she noticed that. Her lungs were burning, and her saliva tasted blood.
It was way ahead of her,and she knew it would get away. She was already slowing down, and it was running faster. She had to use her bow and arrow, and she had to do it quick.
She retrieved it and used it,placing the arrow on the bow.She stretched it and then it was gone, flying. It hit it,and she whispered "Bullseye!".
It fell, fast and hard and that way she moved closer. It was groaning and moaning, the pain was almost unbearable. The poison was spreading,it would be having a convulsion anytime soon. She patiently waited. Then,it went still. She couldn't see the pupils, its' eyes were closed. But she knew it was dead,so she packed up and made her way back.
When she was in the car, regret flooded through her.She should have checked it's pupils. It could've been alive.Maybe it tricked her,but at the moment she didn't have plans to go back there, she'd check the next morning.
She once again drove back home, where her true happiness lied. Her walls were as comforting as a hug.Her floors were as cosy as a fire. Her couches were like homemade bread to her and her bed was heaven's heart.
She wanted to be in paradise at the moment. She wanted to sleep, clear her thoughts.Maybe read a good book. She, wanted to be all by herself, but deep down it felt impossible.
No.
She was being negative again. She had to stay positive.Maybe it was because of her appointment early that afternoon. The thought of her being pregnant-which was completely absurd-haunted her.
This was the time when she needed her dad more than anyone in the world. She needed his hug,his warm embrace. She wanted to hear his laugh, his stories. His advice. She needed a close family member, but unfortunately she had none.
That's when she realized how lonely she was.She had no family, and no close friends,as depressing as that sounded. All she had was herself, and her little house.
And her "soon-to-come-new-baby.
She laughed at the ridiculous thought.Impossible, she repeated again. She decided to make some dinner for herself,it would help her clear her thoughts.Get herself together. She needed that.
She began chopping up a variety of vegetables.Tomatoes,onions,peppers.She cubed some chicken too. She'd probably stir fry the veggies, add the chicken in there too. Some spice to add flavour, and some rice.It distracted her perfectly well, she barely thought about the issue.
When there was a knock on her door, she froze. She held the kitchen knife in her hand, and slowly moved towards the door. The first thought that popped into her mind was the vampire she killed not too long ago.Panic flooded through her as she moved towards the door. She looked through the peephole.
Nothing.
She frowned. How would that be?She opened the door, slightly annoyed. The moment she stepped outside,a pale body jumped in front of her.
She screamed.
"Calm down,it's just me."the voice said.Francesca frowned once again and mumbled,"Troy?"
"Yep,it's me."
"You scared me!"
"Gee,sorry.I just wanted to say hi."he said apologetically. She immediately felt bad, maybe she was overeating.
"It's okay,"she said."Come on in for dinner."she invited, and he happily went into the house.During their meal, she didn't say a thing about the pregnancy, she wasn't sure yet.But if the doctor was telling the truth,he'd have some serious explaining to do.
Or he'd be dead.
