Chapter 6

Caroline wished she could say her second day was an improvement.

After the running late debacle, and its consequences - and Mrs. Argent definitely counted as a consequence - she made sure to be early for her second round. Because that’s exactly how it felt - like she was about to go a round in the ring and she had the apprehension to accompany her.

She also wanted to bring up Erica’s situation with one of the administrators to see if there was anything she could do. She decided to keep Erica anonymous for now, not wanting to make things worse for her if the other students somehow found out. There seemed to be a culture of keeping quiet with the students and she hoped with all her heart that didn’t extend to the front office.

Her hopes were dashed that very morning.

After a patronizing talk with an assistant principal whose head she wanted to bite off, Caroline decided to keep an eye on Erica herself and step in if she needed to. They could try to fire her, it’s not like she needed the job. Something that the jerkoff of an AP didn’t know and most likely wouldn’t give two figs about when he threatened her with just that if she insisted on “rocking the boat” with the school’s main attraction aka the lacrosse players.

After that beautiful start to her day, Scott and Stiles ran out of her first period like the devil was on their heels halfway through class. According to the rest of her students, this was normal behavior for the two. Allison was still missing from third period and today, so was Lydia Martin.

Caroline didn’t understand what was going on with these kids but decided to mind her business and focus on the kids that were here. With that lacrosse jersey Scott and Stiles were sporting this morning she doubted anything would be done if she brought her concerns to an administrator. But still, Caroline felt weird not knowing the whereabouts of kids she was entrusted with watching and in a sense, protecting. She doubted they ran their mid-class disappearances by the front office.

When she’d been skipping and running out of class, she’d been dealing with - Caroline shook her head to clear the thought. What were the chances these kids were skipping class to plot how to avoid certain death at the hands of a big bad?

At least the first part of the lesson plan was now officially underway and the kids weren’t just on their phones all day. Glass half full and all that.

By her last class, Caroline had gotten into a bit of a groove. No more kids ran out of any of her classes and she actually… enjoyed herself. Remembered why she’d wanted to do this in the first place. Having lively discussions with the class about that book she'd finally found and plotting ways to make the assignments left for them more interesting.

Until she closed her door after the bell rang and realized Erica wasn’t part of the upturned faces expectantly staring back at her.

“Anyone seen Erica?”

“Who cares?” The jock from yesterday, whose name Caroline hadn’t bothered learning, spouted off immediately.

“I do. That wasn’t made obvious to you by my asking?” She plastered a pleasant smile on her face and ignored the snickering from the other students. The boy's face flushed red.

She continued on with her lesson plan for the day and tried to keep her mind from straying and worrying about her student.

She had no reason to worry. Erica didn’t seem like the skipping type but neither did Allison and Lydia. Skipping is a prevalent pastime at Beacon Hills High she was quickly learning. And with how she was treated yesterday, Caroline couldn’t blame Erica for not wanting to deal.
