Chapter 7
A sudden hush gripping the cafeteria found Caroline lifting her head in time to witness the reemergence of Erica Reyes.
From her position in the teacher’s lunch line, her eyes followed the nearly unrecognizable Erica as she strolled through the cafeteria, the heels of her pumps echoing through the rafters. Gradually, a smirk grew on the teenager's face as she basked in the awe and shock of her classmates. Erica was having her moment in the sun. But how? It wasn’t just the confidence in her strides that were new, the predatory litheness did not belong. Especially from a young woman who just yesterday was hospitalized due to her lack of grace and overall strength.
This was Caroline's first time seeing her student since finding her wandering near the morgue of the hospital the day before. She'd left soon after with Erica’s reassurance that she was okay. Better than okay.
She wasn’t lying.
Erica paused her glide across the cheap linoleum when she reached Tweedledee and Tweedledum. They had, to her surprise, actually stayed for the entirety of her class today, and she was happy to know she had found a weakness - their parents.
With the entire cafeteria locked in, watching with bated breath, Erica snatched an apple off their table, smirk widened before she strutted out the way she came. Every eyeball glued to her back.
Well then.
Thing 1 and Thing 2 scrambled out of their seats and hastily followed her through the cafeteria’s heavy double doors. After a minute's hesitation, Caroline ran out of the side door used only by teachers as a shortcut and followed them.
She really ought to start minding her own business.
Nervous about using super speed during school hours, she lengthened her strides instead and put some power behind them, essentially gliding like Erica had a few minutes earlier.
She rushed out of the school's front doors just in time to witness Erica lowering herself into a black Camaro while wagging her fingers at the boys in a wave. Caroline scrunched her nose against a familiar, peculiar scent.
The car tore out of the parking lot, but not before allowing Caroline a glimpse at the driver’s side profile.
“It’s the same guy,” She whispered to herself, her stomach curdling.
Scott whirled around from where he'd been huddled with Stiles, “You know Derek Hale?” He questioned roughly. This kid was so suspicious of her and she needed to understand why.
She lasered in on her student. That smell of dog seemed to be permeating from him. Just like - Caroline shook her head. Nope. Not going there.
“How old is this guy?” Caroline asked.
“Derek? He’s way older than us. Like twenty-five.” Stiles supplied. She didn’t want to know how “ways” he’d attach to her twenty-eight years.
“What’s a twenty-five-year-old doing with a sixteen-year-old girl?” Scott and Stiles shared a look, which only served to heighten the itch she felt to figure out what the hell was going on with her students and this grown-ass man.
“Tell me what you know.” She ordered in her best teacher voice. She should compel the little idiots.
“Oh, nothing,” Stiles said, a virtuous smile she didn’t buy for a second gracing his face. “We gotta get to practice though. Don’t we, Scott?” His voice comically went up an octave every other word. After fumbling to grab Scott’s arm, he somehow tripped over… nothing before dragging his best friend away. Scott stammered along in an effort to continue their fib.
