Chapter 16

It was not in and out.

"What is that?" Caroline sharpened her hearing, head tilted in the direction the scratches were coming from.

The Sheriff's Office was dark except for the flashing red emergency lights. The night officer had been sent to the gas station across the street for a red bull break, courtesy of Caroline's compulsion. She'd been fighting to keep her eyes open anyway.

"What's what?" Derek stood behind her.

"That ... scratching sound." She pointed towards the dark hallway, "It's coming from–"

She blinked to make sure her eyes were seeing what she thought they were seeing. A scaled, clawed hand gripped the edge of one of the walls creating the hallway. And she watched as claw by claw, a second hand joined the first, pulling along a scaly head, complete with slitted eyes. It was a giant, humanoid lizard. Caroline's heart pounded against her ribcage, adrenaline almost making her dizzy. In all her years and clashes with different supernatural creatures, she'd never seen anything like it.

A sharp pointed tail flicked in their direction.

Caroline flitted away a second before the tail speared her through the gut. Derek wasn't so lucky. The force of the creature's tail sent him flying before it entwined around his middle and yanked him from mid-air, sending him crashing into the filing cabinets propped in the corner.

A soft groan escaped his lips, and Caroline exhaled sharply. She knew werewolves did not break easily, but the strength of that thing was unknown to her.

The creature continued to pull itself from the hallway, scaling the walls gradually.

"Derek, what the fuck is that?"

"Go get Isaac." He groaned, rolling over.

"Scott is back there. Derek—"

"Go! Now!"

"I'm not leaving you with whatever the fuck that is!"

"Go!" The alpha pushed onto his knees, then limped to his feet toward the creature. Caroline still couldn't believe her eyes. The stench of blood, Derek's blood, permeated the air. The alpha swayed on his feet, blood pouring from a wound on his hairline and another she couldn't see.

"Scott, hurry up!" She screamed in the general direction of the holding cells while speeding to Derek's side. They needed to get the fuck out of here yesterday. Retreat and regroup was her game plan. She threw the alpha over her shoulder fireman style and immediately sped to the back where the holding cells were. The scratching sounds that she now recognized as claws on the walls followed.

Stiles was outside in his Jeep playing getaway driver. They just needed to get to Stiles.

"Scott!"

The teen wolf was in the holding cell with a passed-out Isaac trying to rouse him.

"We don't have time for that right now. You're gonna have to carry or drag him out. Now! Let's go!" She walked backward towards the emergency exit door. The creature pounded at the steel door she'd barred behind her, creating frisbee-sized craters.

"What the hell is that?" Scott dragged Isaac off the cot Isaac had been laying in.

"Questions later, let's go!" She was getting more worried by the quiet, dead weight of the alpha on her back by the second.

The steel door behind them creaked on its hinges as she reached the end of the hall to the emergency exit, slamming it open with a kick. She held it open with her body, and Scott made it through just as the door keeping the creature out gave in. It wasted no time eating the distance between them.
