I told her about getting a job and helping her with the money but she burst into tears. I thought that was the perfect thing to say. Maybe it wasn't. "Hey! don't cry I'm sorry!" Tears continued leaking out of her eyes as she spoke "You don't have to do that, You don't have to take this burden on your shoulders "

"It's not a burden, we are a family Ji ah, I did it when Omma was in the hospital the only difference is that I was alone but I'm 100% sure that if you were here at that time you would've done the same for me," I told her and I meant it, every single word, no doubt in my mind.

She remained silent for a few seconds and then she smiled through her tears murmuring a thank you.
I shifted my position from crouching down before her to sitting next to her with my back resting against the couch, just like hers. We both remained silent for a while but it wasn't an uncomfortable silence. Then I spoke up "I didn't know you had a stepmother," I asked her, "Guess halmeoni can keep secrets too," I said in a playful manner
"I didn't know either" Ji-ah replied without any hesitation but then her expression changed as she realized that her tongue slipped but the arrow was out in the air now. "What?' I couldn't keep the element of shock out of my voice. She didn't say anything and I realized that I'm pushing her to spill which I shouldn't be doing "It's ok if you don't want to talk about it" I said
"I think I do... I want to let it out, it's cluttering my brain" Ji-ah heaved a sigh and started speaking, looking straight ahead while I looked straight at her.

"My parents got separated when I was five and I didn't see my father after that, not until I turned 15. I never got in touch with my father ever so I didn't know if he ever married someone after my mom" She paused, her voice sounded weak, she was trying not to cry, and I squeezed her hand to encourage her,

"Then one day I came home to their dead bodies, I have no memories of my father the only thing I remember is his face when I lifted the white sheets off of his dead body it's his only clear image that I have and it never goes away it's gonna stay with me forever, Ji-ah wiped her face and continued "Did you hear the word deal? when I was on the phone" She asked me and I nodded and she chuckled bitterly "I was an orphan, didn't know what was gonna happen, and then I get informed that I have a stepmother, my father, he didn't stay alone in the grief of losing his daughter that perfect image of him it was shattered, My step mother Julia she was my legal guardian now and I was sent to her, she was horrible, Just after a few months of movies in with her I wanted to leave so I searched for Halmeoni's number and contacted her for the very first time, I was naive I told her everything that I wanted to come to her, I asked her to take my custody she talked to my step mother but that woman she's hungry for wealth"

"She told halmeoni that If I give up my shares in my father's property and business then she'll give halmeoni my custody, we were naive, didn't know much about the law so we agreed she took everything from me, and then we found out that It was not possible until I turned eighteen. I was never going to beg that trash for the name of a mother but I have no choice'

I.. have to .." I didn't let her complete her sentence as I wrapped my arm around her shoulders and engulfed her in a side hug, tugging her closer "Shh.. I understand you don't have to say anything else" I caressed her back with one hand, while the other one was wrapped around her. I don't know for how long we sat like that

until her tears subsided and she moved away from me, taking the warmth away, leaving me cold "I'm sorry, I drenched your shirt' she said pointing at the wet patch on my collar
"Ah! forget it it's nothing" I told her.
