In which Harry asks Draco to the Yule Ball instead of Cho
...
Harry's POV:
I was just leaving the owlery. I had to keep switching owls, as Siruis advised. Hedwig wasn't very happy about having her job replaced. I started down the steps, making a mental note to pick up some more treats for her during our next Hogsmeade trip.
Then I bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm so sorry-"
Draco Malfoy scowled at me. "Oh shut it, Pottah. And watch where you're going for once!"
I shut up, but not because Draco told me to. His appearance was more than enough to make me shut up. It didn't make much sense. He looked like every other Slytherin, same dark green tie and long black robs. But he wore them so much better. Right then and there, I was starstruck. The only thing that brought me back to the present were the loud hooting of the owls behind me.
Draco was still scowling at me, dusting his robs. I noticed a bundle of flowers had fallen off of him when he fell. I frowned. People all around the castle giving these things out to their Yule Ball dates. If Draco had one that meant...
My heart sank. I knew Draco was way out of my league, but still, a part of me wanted to believe that I could go to the Yule Ball with him. I picked up the flower bunch. "So.. you have a date already, don't you?"
Draco glanced at me like he was still trying to find another insult to throw at me for knocking him over. When he couldn't he answered my question instead.
"I'm not sure if that was meant to be an insult or not but no, Pottah. I don't have a date. Pansy gave this to me to trick gits like you into thinking I do. Do you know how many people keep asking me? It's exhausting turning down so many!" Draco fanned himself as if just talking about the people he has to turn down is tiring him.
My heart started pounding again.
"So I suppose one more ask wouldn't mean anything, right?"
Draco looked right at me with his stormy grey eyes. "What're you on about?"
I handed him his bundle of flowers. "Look Mal- Draco. I know I act like I couldn't give a damn about you but the truth is I do. And I'd like to go to the ball with you. If you want to, that is."
I swear I saw just a hint of smile of Draco's face. He took his flowers from me. "Well, Pottah. You're lucky I'm in a good mood. Sure, I'll go to the ball with you. But I swear if you show up in some ridiculous dress robs I'm taking back my acceptation."
I laughed a bit. "Only the finest robes for you, Draco. I promise."
Draco nodded as if that's all he needed to settle. As he walked up the stairs, he kissed my cheek.
"See you tonight, Harry."
Then he was gone.
I spent the rest of the day with my head in the clouds.
...
Very short because I have like, 5 others to finish.
Just something that's been sitting in my drafts for a while.
