It was happening, it felt like a dream. Teddy floated his way through the day until he found himself driving to get surgery. He found himself lying down as anesthetics took over his body and when he woke up, he was flat.

Teddy didn't know what to do; he was mainly trying not to cry, from joy or pain. He knew he was drugged up on painkillers but was still too terrified to move a muscle. He had to stay in a recovery room for the next 6 hours under the doctor's supervision but after nothing looked too horrifically wrong they sent him home the next day telling him to get around two weeks off of work and to return to the doctor so that they could check in on him.

The next two weeks were the worst most boring two weeks of his life after binging every show ever on Netflix and not knowing what to do he found himself just sitting around most of the time.

He was in the middle of taking his morning medication when he got a call from Spencer.

"Hey, Spence what's up?" Teddy said casually as he finished taking his pills, a mixture of both pain medication and mental health medication.

"Not much, the team is starting a new case and was wondering if I could stop by where you live when we finish the case?"

"Sure! I'm bored out of my mind here, I've had way too much time on my hands." Teddy said cheerfully putting his phone on speaker as he entered his living room and started doing some light stretches. "What's the case about?"

"Not anything too crazy so far, just seems like two mission-based killers with one of them seeming uncertain about killing. He called the police talking about the other unsub named Raphael who was about to kill."

"Woah, well best of luck to you. You stay safe for me 'kay Spence?"

"I'll try my best Teddy. Hope you've been recovering well."

"Recovery has been fine, more boring than anything. I'm honestly surprised you still have my phone number."

"Well I mean photographic memory and all but I still have the napkin. It just migrated to my blouse pocket instead." Spencer chuckled over the phone and Teddy could clearly imagine Spencer's smile, the little dimples on both sides of his mouth, and the smile lines that would appear whenever he grinned, how just looking at that perfect genuine smile would light up anyone's day or at least Teddy's.

The two talked for a few minutes before Spencer had to leave saying the jet was taking off. Teddy sighed resting his phone on his stomach while he lay motionless on the couch, his only new form of entertainment gone way too soon.

Teddy spent the next few days moping about keeping his phone right next to him at all times awaiting a call from Spencer. It was on the third day that he got a call and practically leaped out of his seat.

"Spencer?"

"No, this is Hotch speaking of Reid he's been well... kidnapped. We sent Reid and JJ to go interview a potential witness and... well, JJ's fine but Gideon said it would be a good idea to call you about it. Let you know, I can't have you coming back to work yet but we're gonna catch this guy Greenfield, trust me this will all be over soon just stay where you are and recover and Reid will be fine." Hotch's voice was cold and determined and there was a heavy weight between his words as if he was trying to believe what he was saying himself.

Teddy dropped his phone when he heard the news, how could something so amazing be followed by something so horrible? Spence didn't deserve this, no one deserved this but especially not a man so wonderful and bright as him.
