It had been thirty-seven days. Eve had counted. It was about the only thing she could keep track of now. She couldn't remember when she last ate, when she had last slept, when she last washed, though, the smell that her armpits were emitting told her it wasn't recently. All she could remember was the days it had been since she had lost the person she cared most about. The one person who could truly make her smile, who brought out the person she had always wanted to be, brought her freedom. Her Villanelle.
She had blamed herself for what happened that night. She thought that maybe if she had just left it alone then Villanelle wouldn't be dead. Deep down she knew that she wasn't the type of person to do that but she wished with everything that she was, that she could have been, just in that moment. That she could have turned to Villanelle and said "actually, this is enough" and then she would have grabbed her hand and danced her back home and into bed. But Eve could never have been that. If she had been that person, she would have still been living in that house, with that husband and without any knowledge of Villanelle at all. Eve thought on that for a while, trying to decide which fate she thought was more insufferable.
Her phone pinged and broke her trance. Eve didn't check her phone anymore. What was the point? There was no more excitement or colour to anything. The only time she used it was when she ordered food. Last week a restaurant had sent her curly fries instead of normal ones, that didn't end well and she didn't want to take that risk again, so no more takeaways. Something told her to pick it up this time. It pinged once more as she hesitantly took it from the nightstand. Two texts popped up from an unsaved number:
"Daluicci's special deal!!! 2 large Pizza's and a side for £24.99..."
Eve rolled her eyes and threw her phone to the ground, not even bothering to look at the other message. She shut her eyes and returned to bed, the sounds of the busy city below lulling her to sleep.
It was dark when she woke to a harsh banging on the door. She contemplated letting the knocker get bored. Maybe they would find someone else to bother. But they had been knocking for a rather long time with little to no break at all. This felt important to Eve, nobody really spoke to her anymore, Yusuf had packed his bags a few weeks ago after a rather attractive couple asked him to come with them around Europe. Carolyn had disappeared, after that final meeting in the pub, she hadn't heard anything from her since, not even a shred of support after it happened, obviously she knew, Eve was furious at her after all Eve had done to help her when Kenny-
"Eve!" a familiar voice called from the other side of the door... "Eve it's Pam, I know you're there, this is important... Eve". Pam? The girl with Konstantin? What did she want with Eve? Eve opened the door, "what do you want?" she said, looking at the familiar face. Pam hadn't changed much. That was understandable, it had only been a few weeks since she'd last seen her, but for some reason, in the brief time it took for Eve to get from her bed to the door, she expected someone completely different to be stood in front of her, after all, she'd changed, so why hadn't everyone else? "Can I come in?" Pam said as she began to walk towards her, Eve quickly pulled the door to where only her face could be seen. "Why?" Eve whispered, hesitant to let anyone see the way she had been living. "Because there's something you need to know" there was a pause, Pam broke it with three words. Three words that Eve never thought she would ever hear anyone say to her again "It's about Villanelle". The door opened and Pam walked inside.
End of Chapter One. :)
