"SO HOW DID you find out about this retreat? did you see this?" gretchen asked handing her the brochure for the dawn of eve retreat she was supposed to go to. isa picked it up and flipped through it. "it was the ending of winter break and i was looking at things i could do this summer. i like to plan trips and stuff really really early. my ex boyfriend and i were looking through stacks of them my mom found. my mom and stepdad were going on a late honeymoon trip."

ex boyfriend

isa sat on the floor of her bedroom looking at stacks of brochures and pictures of different things she could do this summer while her parents were away. it was winter break and she wanted to decide early. isa liked to have trips planned a couple of months ahead, by a couple, she means like five months.

there was a knock on her window, before it slid open. isa looked up and jacob slid into the room and closed the window behind him. he sat next to isa and kissed isa on the cheek. he picked up some of the pan flits "ooh. girls summer surf camp, cool girls can camp with and exclamation point, dawn of eve. dawn of eve. that's the only one that sounds cool out of all of these." he said.

"yeah. it's in hawaii for two weeks and there's surfing and yoga and we'd stay at this amazing hotel next to the beach." isa explained. jacob frowned "so...you'll be gone. i won't see you before i leave for college. i'm leaving early." he said.

isa looked down "yeah, but i didn't decide yet. there's so many options that aren't here." she said handing him more brochures to look at. jacob pointed to one "this one looks like they sit around a campfire and get high." isa laughed.

"girls soccer camp." jacob handed her another one.

"i went to this already. i got hurt here a couple of years ago. they teach you how to play dirty." isa said ripping up the brochure and placing it in the trash. "what about this one? it'll have a bunch of scouts looking at you. it's good for college."

"yeah, i think these are my top three." isa said handing him the dawn of eve, an art study class in france, and a soccer camp.

"i think this one is good for you, isa. as cool as this one sounds, it sounds like some type of cult or code name." he said handing her the soccer camp one again. she didn't want to go to soccer camp this year. she wanted to do something different like a girl retreat. she wanted to go to the dawn of eve.

march, before the retreat

"isa, you're making the wrong decision. you can go next year, it's 19 and under!" jacob said and isa sighed. "jacob, i want to do this. i don't want you choosing for me." isa said

"i just wanna spend more time with you before i leave. we won't see each other for months! probably till christmas. all i'm asking is for you to stay. i just wanna spend the summer together before i leave." he said.

"it's too late, jake. i signed up for it already." isa said showing jacob her phone. jacob stood up and walked her door angrily and slammed the door. isa cried that night. she kept telling her self she made the wrong choice and that she should have listened to him.

the next day, jacob didn't speak to her at all at school. he'd walk past her and not even give her a glance. isa frowned. did she make the right decision? she thought she maybe could have spoke with him more before signing up, but she really wanted to do this now.

day 26

isa sat by the rocks with her feet dipping into the cold ocean water. her sweatpants were rolled up and she crossed her arms and rested them on her knees. if she listened to him, she wouldn't be here right now. she wouldn't be stuck on an island with boys who are fighting like this was the survival of the fittest type thing.

she wondered what her summer would be like if she wasn't here. what she'd be doing with her friends and jacob, if they didn't break up. she looked over at the boys by the fire. at the same time, if she didn't come, she wouldn't have met all these people, she wouldn't have met kirin, she wouldn't have these stories to tell to people when she got back home.

being stuck on an island like this was terrible, but isa felt like this was a whole learning experience for her.
