I Have Family

I felt the cold air around me.

The playground...

I looked up into the sky, I sighed. It's been five years. And I don't even remember their faces. A crow landed next to something dead on the ground. It starts to eating from the corpse. How disturbing...

The rotten flesh, stinks even though I'm on the other side of the playground. I put on my headphones, I turn on my iPod and start my favorite song. The rain turns my hair wet, and drips onto my face. The other kids in the orphanage, never liked me, they wouldn't talk to me. I look up by the sound of a familiar voice.

"Karen, can you come up here sweetheart?" The mistress shouted out the window from her office. I got up, ran into the building, up the stairs, through the halls, all the way to her office. I knocked on the door.

"Come in, Karen." The mistress called out from within the room. I walked in.

"Hello Karen." A man sitting in a chair looks at me. He was bald, wearing a suit, and holding a bunch of papers. "I'm the one looking into your case, also I've been trying to find you a family."

"What am I needed for this time?" I asked a bit confused at the situation.

"Not a new family." He said, and my hopes fell. "You have a brother, Karen."

My eyes widen, I had always felt like I wasn't completely alone. That I had a place I belonged to, that I had someone who was my family.

"So she will leave?" The mistress asked quietly, she had clearly taken a liking to me.

"That's up to Karen," The man looked at me. "do you wish to ask him?"

"Oh yes, please do ask him." I felt like I could explode in happiness.

"Alright, I'll contact him." He said smiling to me. "Might be a few days before we get an answer."

"Alright, I can wait." I said, smiling brightly.

"Karen, before you go, could you go to the kitchen and ask how long it is untill they are done with dinner?" The mistress asked me.

"I will." I left the room. I walked back through the halls, down the stairs, through more halls, and I ended up in the kitchen. Still caught in my thoughts.

I threw myself onto my bed, I stared into the ceiling. Teresa looked at me.

"You're smiling? I didn't know that was possible." She said as she brushed her long blonde hair.

"I didn't know either." I answered with no interest in her mean comment for me. Nothing could make me cry anymore. I sighed and change into a nightdress. I pulled the blankets around me and fell asleep faster than ever. This time I don't dream anything, I used to get nightmares every time I slept.

The blankets warms around me, my breath is cold. The room is cold but I am warm. I open my eyes by the sound of the mistress knocking on my door.

"Karen there has been a change in the plans of your brother coming this friday. He'll be here today." I jump up, I get in my clothes in a hurry. I run down stairs, out the doors to the playground. I sit down on the swing, I put on my headphones. Phoebe Ryan's song 'Mine' fills my ears once again. My voice sings along quietly. I close my eyes.

I heared a car parking in the parking lot. I climbed the oaktree, the leaves were cold against my cheeks and neck. A man and a woman walked to the front door. They walked straight in and the door is shut behind them. Another two cars drove in, and another two couples walked in. The first couple walked into the playground, they had already seen me sitting in the tree.

"Hi there." The woman walked up to the tree. "Why are you all the way up there? aren't you scared"

"There is no reason to be scared of heights." I answer.

I jump down from the tree, I run to the mistress. I don't even look back at the couple, standing under the oaktree and looking after me. I go to the main waiting area.

Two young adults are standing at a window. I feel a hand on my shoulder and I looked up at the mistress who had appeared behind me.

The man walks to me. He had brown, curly hair along with a beard. He was wearing black jeans and a grey t-shirt. The woman had brightly colored hair, she was wearing a very colorful and confusing outfit.

"Hi Karen." Adam, the young man, said and placed his hand on my shoulder kneeling down to my level.

"Hi Adam." I whispered shyly, and tug lightly at my hoodie.

"Let's go home." He said, and held out his hand, I hesitated just for a moment. But I then placed mine in his, I had to learn to trust my own brother.
