march 20th, 1986:

"welcome to your life, there's no turning back..."

the radio was blasting, the windows are down, and my hair is blowing everywhere in the wind.

i look out of the window at the trees lining the highway, being stuck in a daydream of the reunion with my friends.

what are they going to say? will they be happy or upset that i'm home early?

i spotted the highway exit. i turned to my mom and grinned. i was too excited.

she smiled back. she pulls our small car off of the highway, towards hawkins; towards home.

being at college has been fun, but i'll admit, i missed my bedroom, my home, and steve.

especially steve.

i would call him everyday at 5:00 P.M, because that was the start of his break time.

we'd talk for exactly 30 minutes before he would have to get back to work.

it became a routine, until now.

we passed the old gas station, melvald's, and the police station.

horrific memories flash across my mind, remembering hopper and his sacrifice for the town.

god i miss him.

i saw family video, and i was nearly out of my seat.

mom pulled into a parking spot.

i unbuckle as fast as i could, opened the door, and picked up my skateboard that was laying on the floor next to my feet. "see you later mom gotta go!" i said in a flash.

"wait wait! i want you home soon! phil and i have a date tonight."

"alright bye!" i slammed the door. as i ran into the movie shop, the small bell rang as i opened the door. the first thing i saw was my cousin's back.

she was stacking tv remotes.

i tiptoed below the counter so she couldn't see me.

"hi, welcome to family video. is there any specific movie you-" she stopped her question. "hello?"

i spoke in an old lady voice. "hello, yes, i would like to rent the outsiders please!" i stood up after i spoke.

robin got really got excited. "HOLY SHIT! KAT!" she hopped over the counter and hugged me.

we rocked back and forth while she held me as tight as she could.

"SHH! i'm trying to surprise steve." i whispered.

"oh my god! you're home! i missed you."

"same here. how is it working here?" i asked, pulling out of the hug.

"it's awesome. watching movies everyday is WAY better than scooping ice cream for 15 hours a day." she chuckled.

"i bet. this place is awesome. so," i clapped my hands together and smiled. "...where is he?"

"i knew you would ask. he's back there in the break room." robin looked at her wrist watch and huffed. "you better hurry. it's 5:15, he's probably freaking out."

"oh shit you're right. i'll be back soon." i said. i shuffled my feet to the back of the store, and found the break room. i put my ear to the door, and i could hear a phone being slammed on a table. i chuckled, because i know he's freaking out that I didn't call. i knocked on the door.

"not now robin." steve answered.

it sounded amazing to not hear his voice through a phone.

i knocked again.
