(Haste: Two.)

(Note: Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I had no motivation for a long time. I'll try to get back to it!)

Hitch sighed to himself. Today was the day Zipp was leaving Maretime Bay to go on a special discovery mission, far away from Equestria. He was proud his wife became a skilled detective, probably the best in a long time. But, there was one issue...

The toddler.

Haste had always favored his mother. It never bothered him, but, he clung to her like sticky glue; today was going to be rough.

Both parents woke up bright and early, Zipp awaiting her son's happy face as she flew into the nursery room. Haste was sleeping soundly in his little bed, and Zipp smiled, stroking his mane.

"Haste. Hasty~" she cooed softly. "Time to wake up, kiddo, breakfast."

He fluttered his eyes open, gazing at her with his sparkling turquoise orbs. He gave a small yawn, then said, tiredly, "Mama?"

She placed a kiss on his forehead. "Oh, I'm gonna miss you."

He tilted his head. "Mama, where go? You no go away? Wight?" He was giving her his puppy-dog look, knowing even the toughest pegasus Zipp was, would fall for.

"It's just for a few days, buddy. There's this really big case Mom's gotta solve." She tried to make her tone exciting and optimistic, but it didn't work, and Haste whimpered.

"D-don't go!"

Hitch entered the room then. "Getting breakfast ready." He then saw his son's silken expression. "Not taking it well, huh? I've reminded him time and time again, but...I guess it's not sinking in."

She then picked him up. "I feel so bad, Hitch. I don't wanna leave him, and I know he's gonna be miserable. I don't want him thinking I abandoned him or something."

"Hey, hey," Hitch said in a gentle voice. "Honey, relax. This is gonna be hard for both of you, but, you can do it. And I think I have a way to help."

"What?" Zipp asked, a little desperate. Hitch then grabbed the stuffed cat Haste slept with at night. "Sunny taught me this is called a ritual. Giving them something you have or gave them makes them feel reassurance."

"Huh. Thank you, hun. I need to tell Sunny thanks too." She then looked to her son. "Here, baby. Mommy gave you that, remember?"

He nodded his head, "My birthday. You gave it to me."

She nodded her head. "Keep him close, that way you'll remember me while I'm gone, okay?"

"Not forever though, wight?"

She shook her head. "No. I will be back before you know it." She tapped his muzzle, making him giggle, holding onto his stuffed cat.

"Well, come on down, don't want the breakfast to burn." Hitch said, and they all went downstairs.

The worst part of the day...

"No go! No go!" Haste wailed. Zipp had barely made it to the door when her son yanked at her tail, begging for more kisses and hugs.

"Sweet mother of Discord, Haste!" Hitch growled, trying to pull him back. It was not like him to lose his temper, if barely having one, but ever since he came a father, it seemed to showcase itself more often.

This was an example of it.

"Haste Brisk Drift! Let go of your mother at once and stop this temper tantrum!" he demanded, only making him scream more.

"Good job, sheriff." Zipp groaned. She embraced her son again as he cried into her shoulder. Hitch rubbed his head with guilt and hopelessness.

This was so painful to watch...

Zipp stammered, "P-please, honey, stop crying. M-mommy's gonna be back soon. Ohhh, maybe I should just not go. Maybe I should just retire and become a stay-at-home mom."

"No." Hitch said, firmly. He then took his son, after two minutes of struggle. Zipp looked to him reluctantly, kissed him, then said, "Good luck," and lastly, placed one last kiss on her son's forehead before leaving.

Hitch felt as though he lost some of his hearing after the two hours of the little pegasus' tantrum. He was now stroking his messy locks as he snuggled into his fur, having fallen asleep, his cheeks soaked with dried tears.

Hitch sighed, leaning his head back. Being a parent is hard, no one said it was easy. It's worth it though, it really is.

He pulled his head up again and looked at his son, feeling warmth grow inside him. It was rare he had moments with his boy. Being a mother's child, he would always call for her.

Reading a story, playing games, lullabies, it was most, if not all the time, her. He was also gifted wings like her, so she could teach him things he couldn't.

He wasn't jealous. Maybe felt a little left out though.

He placed a small kiss on his forehead, muttering softly, "I'm sorry I yelled at you, little guy. I just...lost my temper. I won't do it again. I love you, so much."

He could have sworn he understood what he said, as a small smile appeared on the colt's face.

He kissed his cheek, delighted by his son's giggle. He then started to feel tired as well, and he draped the blanket from on top of the couch, covering both of them with it.

He fell asleep faster than he thought.

A few days later...

Haste screeched and continued zooming around the house. Hitch gave a deep, evil chuckle, right on his tail. "You can never escape from me! The monster's gonna get you, and he's gonna cook you in a pie!"

"No you not!" Haste blew a raspberry at him, flapping his little wings hysterically as he tried escaping. He then tried hiding behind one of the armchairs in the living room, trying to stay silent.

"Oh little gremlin~?" Haste said in a sing-song voice. "Where's he gone? Naughty, so very naughty. He needs to be taught a lesson."

His amber eyes narrowed to the armchair, smirking.

"Oh, you're good at hiding," he gave another low chuckle. "Could you possibly be..." He crept over, then popped his head into view, "here?!"

"Ahhh!" Haste gasped, and Hitch grabbed him. He squirmed against his grip. "No! Wet go, monstwer! I don't taste good!"

"Hm, I don't know. You smell delicious. I think I need to see for myself." He sat on the couch, plopping his son on his back, exposing his tummy.

He grinned, then began nibbling at it, sending the colt into a fit of hysterics, wiggling and kicking his little back legs.

They were too distracted to even notice Zipp's return, and she smiled kindly at the sight.
