IT WAS THE DAY BEFORE FAMILY DAY AND Yelena was wrapped inside her sheets, the moonlight shining on her face in the gloaming room, the more she continued to stay awake, the more her thoughts churned.
Yelena could admit she had fun with Mal the hours before, the most fun she'd ever had in a very long time, and her heart whined when she realized that it was all an illusion and it wouldn't last forever.
Yelena sighed, turning away from the window and catching eyes with the picture frame on her dresser, a picture of her and Mary when they were kids, both of them covered in flour with a smile on their faces.
She leaned forward, laying the picture face-first on the dresser, before laying back down, her eyes beginning to prick with tears.
That's when Yelena realized that it's been a few days since she spoke to her best friend, so she stood up, slid on her slippers, and made her way down the hallway of the school.
Yelena's eyes widen when she saw Ben coming down the hallway, backpack in hand, he looked almost dizzy or start-struck, "What are you doing down here?" Yelena questioned, her eyebrows knitted together.
Ben slightly flinched at hearing her voice, but answered, "I was, um—speaking with Doug, discussing some plays for lacrosse."
Yelena looked behind Ben and down the hallway, "these are the women's dorms."
Yelena's eyes widened, believing he was getting back together with Audrey.
Ben scratches his head, "I gotta go, I'll see you later, yeah?"
"Wait, Ben." Yelena grabs his forearm, "You have a little," she wipes her lip with her thumb, trying to indicate that Ben had a dark pink substance smudge on his top lip.
Ben mumbles under his breath, wiping off his mouth with the back of his hand, "bye," he said simply, walking down the hallway until he was fully out of her sight.
