act three, chapter thirty-one
WITH EVERY STEP YELENA TOOK WHILE SHE RAN, THE MORE SHE SPED UP. "Mary!" Yelena called before she was even at the door. "Mary, answer me." Yelena barged into the room, running over to Mary to see her pale body, her breaths short and nearly visible.
Mary couldn't keep her eyes open, she couldn't move from up under the covers and she couldn't stop exhaling in a choppy breath. "Did yo-you get the Kit-Kats?" Mary questions.
Yelena huffs, "Mary, hold on," Yelena grabs her phone, dialing Mal's number but gets no answer, straight to voicemail with a beep afterward. Yelena tried to stare at her phone, but her vision was blurry and her hands couldn't stop shaking.
Mary shut her eyes, "Yelena."
Yelena sat on the edge of the bed, watching Mary lose the bit of energy she had left. "Everything's cold," Mary mutters, she could no longer keep up her facade. "It hurts to move. I-I-" her voice continued to shake.
Yelena couldn't take it, any of it. This couldn't be happening. No. No. No. This isn't real, none of this can be real.
"My-mom," Mary's eyes raise in realization, tears fell onto her pillow, "Yelena, you have to be with her-she can't-she needs me, you have to be with her."
Mary squeezes Yelena's hands. "Promise me."
Yelena felt a rock in her throat. Maybe it was all the fear she was pushing down, maybe it was finally boiling over like a volcano threatening to explode. Yelena breaks, "I promise."
Mary didn't let her hand go, "please don't leave-I'm so scared, Yelena, I've never been so scared in my entire life. I can't-"
Yelena presses her forehead against Mary's, their hands still tangled in one another's, "I won't leave you, I promise I won't leave."
"I have to tell you something." Mary finds the strength to use her tongue to create the words. "I know we've fought, and had our ups and downs but I need you to know that I love you-I always have...and you're my person, even if I'm not yours."
Yelena's heart shattered, and she closed her eyes tight, "I love you, Mary."
After those words were said. Yelena felt Mary's hand loosen.
And the world went silent.

YELENA COULDN'T SPEAK. SHE COULDN'T EVEN MOVE FROM THE CHAIR Mal told her to sit in. Mal had miraculously defeated Audrey with the help of Uma, who seemed to have a change of heart. Hade's ember had broken Maleficent's scepter and all the spells it'd done, meaning that the spell on Audrey had been broken, along with the citizen turn to stone and put into a deep sleep.
