Iwaizumi came home from practice only to see the house was pitch black. Usually the lights would be on all over the house, as if illuminated by the sun itself, and he would be home just in time for dinner. He reached blindly for the lights and flicked the switch only to see you standing at the dining table holding a white box. A smile plastered on your beautiful face that caught him completely off guard.
Your smile like always is brilliant, beautiful and shining. Enough to surprise him and forget how exhausted he was after practice.
You opened the box to reveal a white cake with blue icing in cursive spelling out: Happy Birthday. He had completely forgotten it was his birthday. And yet, here you are surprising him at his own house with a cake.
"You didn't think would forget, right?" You asked as you handed Iwaizumi the cake. As if it were your own home, you started shuffling around drawers in search of a lighter or matches. Watching you search for the matches made him realize how comfortable you are with him and his family. How easy it is to be with you.
Finally, you pulled out the lighter and started lighting the candles. He watched your excitement grow with each candle you lit. One could question whether it was his birthday or yours.
You immediately clapped your hands together once the candles were lit. "Ready?" You asked and took in a deep breath before singing the birthday song to him. Your body swayed side to side with the occasional clap as you happily sang the song.
It never is easy being on the receiving end of the birthday song, and it never got less embarrassing. But seeing the look on your face made it all worth it. If you were happy, so was Iwaizumi. Unknowingly, he watched you sing to him with eyes oozing with endless affection.
"—you," Iwaizumi snapped out of his trance once he saw you talking to him.
"What was that? Sorry," Iwaizumi asked as he set the cake down on the table and headed for the kitchen.
"I love you," you repeated, pronouncing your words clearly for him to hear this time. But he didn't need it, no no, in fact he needed something to hold himself back from hugging you.
"For some time now, Iwa," you continued and reached for his cheeks. Iwaizumi's heart was beating faster than ever, more than he had felt in any match. He felt like was living a dream—no—living in the clouds above singing the with damn angels. The words he yearned for ever since he realized his feelings for you finally reached his ears. His heart felt relaxed for the first time in a very long time, in fact so long it felt unnatural.
"How long," he asked as his mind was rushing with thousands of questions filling his mind. He reached for your hands and leaned into your touch as he continued his relentless, nonstop questions.
"Do you mean it? Do you really love me? I love y—."
Iwaizumi opened his eyes to see you were gone. You weren't standing in front of him touching his face. The cake wasn't set on the counter with blown out candles. He wasn't next to the kitchen standing in front of you. And the silent room filled with the confessions was replaced with the horrific sound of an alarm going on. He was in bed and it was the day after his birthday.
You didn't surprise him at his house with a birthday cake yesterday. In fact, it didn't surprise him that you weren't there. Not after he avoided you like the plague for god knows how long.
He cursed the reality of his current circumstances and felt like he was punched in the face by his decisions. You didn't confess your feelings to him and you are still dating his underclassman. You don't love him, not like he wished in his dream. He could feel himself suffocating and his chest squeeze as tears prickled his eyes. It wasn't real.
