December 31 — Demian

I drove deep into the forest, the road twisting through the trees until I finally reached a pretty little house in the middle of it all. The place was small but charming—one bedroom, a white kitchen, a bathroom, and a medium-sized living room with a grand white piano sitting at its center. The backyard was huge, surrounded by a tall, long fence.

We stepped out of the car, and I couldn't help but smile as I glanced at Rose. She looked so at home in this space, her hair moving with the wind, her eyes bright and full of wonder. Everything about her made my heart ache in the best way, like I was finally seeing the world through a lens I never thought I'd look through. The calmness of the forest, the quiet of the house, the warmth in her presence—it all felt perfect.

We sat in one of the armchairs, just the right size for the two of us, and talked for a little while. I couldn't stop looking at her—her smile, the way she laughed, and how effortlessly she made me feel like I mattered. Each word she spoke, each gesture, was like a pull on my heart, bringing me closer to something I didn't even realize I needed until now. The old me would have never allowed someone to have this much power over me, but with her, I couldn't stop myself from falling deeper.

Then, Rose leaned in with a smile that made my chest tighten. Her lips were close, so close. I could feel her breath against my skin, and in that moment, I realized something—no matter how much I tried to control everything around me, I couldn't control how I felt about her. I didn't want to.

Her lips barely brushed against mine, a soft touch that made my heart beat faster. I had to hold myself back, remind myself that I wanted this, wanted her. She made me feel things I hadn't felt—things that were real and raw, emotions I could no longer pretend weren't there. The way she made me want to be better, to be the person she deserved... It was overwhelming, and I didn't know what to do with it.

I never thought I would feel this way. Never thought I could let someone in this much, but here I was—willing to risk everything, willing to change for her.

I leaned in closer, not caring about the distance between us, not caring about anything but the feel of her in my arms. "You have no idea what you're doing to me," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

She smiled even wider, her hand gently brushing against mine, and for the first time in a long time, I felt... hope.  Hope that maybe I could be the person she saw, the person she deserved. And that thought filled me with an excitement I never thought I'd feel—an excitement that came not from power or control, but from love. We were leaning closer when she spoke.

"I have a surprise for you," she said.

"Just tell me the surprise," I replied, trying to hide my impatience.

"No, Demian. Just let me put something on you first," she teased.

"Oh, no... nonononono..."

"Come on, Demian. It's going to be fun. I'm going to cover your eyes with a necktie," she whispered in my ear, settling in my lap.

I smiled at her, playing along. "Okay, well, if you say it's going to be fun, I'll totally do it, my delicate Rose."

She guided me into the center of the living room, where a chair sat waiting. She handcuffed me to it. For a while, there was silence, and then I started to hear a chair screeching across the floor. The sound was awful, and a sense of unease began to settle in my chest. I started to worry.

What's she doing?

Why hasn't she touched me yet?

And then, it hit me, the smell? Of cigarettes?

Wait, why?

"Rose?" I called out, my voice shaky. "Are you here, baby?"

A cold, cruel laugh echoed in the room. "Baby? You still think I'm your girlfriend?"

Her voice—so cold, so unrecognizable—sent a chill down my spine.

"Rose, this isn't a game anymore."

"NOT A GAME!" she screamed, her voice sharp and piercing. "Well, you should've told me that."

She ripped the necktie from my eyes, and what I saw left me frozen.
