"Mom, can you come for a second?" I called out as I watched her drag some guy by the arm, taking him to a room.

She didn't even turn to look at me. "Ugh... What do you want, little rat? Don't you see I'm busy?"

I stood there, feeling the weight of her words press down on me. "Mom, I just wanted to tell you it's almost midnight, it's a new year—so aren't we going to wish for something?"

She stopped for a moment, almost amused. "Wish for something? Ha, that's a good one. But you know what? I wish you and your brothers would just disappear. Now, leave!"

Her words were cold, harsh. I felt my heart sink, but I didn't argue. She was always like this.
