The next day sparkes the first day of classes. I have breakfast with Lyra, Rose, and the rest of her pack again before making my way back to my dorm to await my schedule. Class starts in twenty minutes, giving us plenty of time to figure out where our classes are. As soon as my schedule drops into the small mailbox outside of my dorm room, I run to Lyra's room. I want to go over it with her and see if we have any classes together. Then this year wouldn't be as awful as it is already looking. I get to her room as she is closing her door, her schedule in hand.
"Hey, Lyra. What class do you have first?" I ask breathlessly. I'm not used to running, I prefer swimming above all other physical activities.
"Arithmetic 101."
"Darn. I have Charms class, Nature Edition. What lunch do you have?
"First lunch, before my last class, which is Literature."
"So, do we have any classes together?" I look at her schedule and let out a long sigh as I realize that we don't have any classes together.
"No! We won't see each other all day?"
"I guess not. Do you want to meet in the library after class?"
"Yeah, for sure. See you then," she says before making her way to her math class which unfortunately for me is all the way on the other side of the school. The school runs on a block schedule so we only had four classes every day, but they are each 80 minutes long. So, we have two days to complete homework as days rotate between white and black days. I don't know how I am going to survive this year.
I get to my first period, Charms, and sit in my assigned seat next to a druid girl who has small deer antlers poking out of her wavy white hair. She's intently reading a book when I sit down beside her.
"Hey, I'm Cora. It looks like we are going to be partners for now." She looks up, her bright green eyes wide in surprise.
"I'm Delia," she whispers before going back to her book. Ok, then, not a talker.
Charms class goes by fairly quickly once the class starts. The teacher, Professor Lepos, has us learning a new spell where we can create water. He tells us that once we finally master it, we can create at least 2 gallons of water that can put out a fire or cure us of dehydration. It was a level zero spell, so it's not as cool as other more advanced spells we will learn later on.
The only thing that's keeping me going through the rest of the day is the thought that I will get to see Lyra at the end of the day. I'm much of a talker so I only really have two friends, Lyra and Rose. So, because neither of them are in any of my classes means that I'm extremely lonely throughout the day. I guess I will have to make some more friends. Too bad no one really wants to talk to me because of my past. Which wasn't even remotely my fault, but most people avoid me and Caleb because of our parents' death and how we had to stay with the school until we were old enough to take care of ourselves. Apparently, people think that we are the school's spies or something and that if they get too close to us, we will rat them out for breaking the rules. Which is stupid in my opinion, but then again most people are stupid.
The rest of the day goes by slowly. After my first period, there is a small break where I try tracking down Lyra, but there are so many students in the halls that my goal quickly becomes impossible, so I look for my second period, Literature. Since I had second lunch, I have my third period, History, right after second period and then have lunch.
I am dreading lunch for most of the day, but it turns out alright, especially when I see that Rose has lunch with me. That makes the day more bearable, knowing that I have at least one friend. During lunch, we talk about our previous classes. Well, it was more Rose telling me about all the fun she had in her arithmetic class which she has with Lyra. Apparently, they have a mischievous jinn in their class whose name is Ben Loughty. I'm trying not to be jealous, but I can't say I'm not relieved when the bell rings.
After lunch, I have combat training in the Amphitheater outside so I make my way down to the grounds. The teacher, Professor Ferrum, shows us where the lockers are and explains that this class is to test and hone our combat skills. As if that isn't implied. Once again, I don't know anyone in this class, but Professor Ferrum declares it a study hall, so I go to find the library, ignoring the other people in my class. In two days, we will start with a small test, so that he can see what we know. Great.
My eyes are glued to the map that we received with our schedule, so that I can find my way to the library. Dang, this school is so confusing. I look up when I hear footsteps coming towards me. It's them. My ex-mate and the beautiful woman. Why are they always together? It's like they are joined at the hip. I haven't told Lyra about finding and being rejected by my mate, since I'm trying to forget about that painful memory. So, of course, they show up in front of me. Of course, fate is that cruel.
I roll my eyes in their direction as we stop in front of each other. He has his left arm around her, his black bracelet shining in the sunlight coming through the windows. She gives me a smirk, her eyes glinting with devilment. Oh, how I hate her.
"Well, well, well. Look what we have here," she says snarkily. "I don't think we ever got your name, pest."
"Cora," I respond, trying to mock her snobby attitude. "Yours?"
"I am Vanessa and this is my fiance Ryker." She rolls her eyes as if their names should be common knowledge.
"Well, Vanessa. You are in my way," I snarl. He has a fiance. He couldn't even wait to meet his mate. Plus, he has to marry this witch. You know what, I don't even want him if this is what he's really like.
"Oh, am I? Then why don't you go around me?" I know what she's doing. She's trying to display her superiority over me by flaunting her power and my mate in front of my face. However, I don't care what either of them think about me. I just want to get to the library so I can do my homework in peace. I do want to show my fearlessness, though. So instead of going around them as she suggested, I stare her down.
"You do not scare me," I state confidently before pushing them apart with a wind spell I learned last year. They both stumble away from each other, leaving me to stride down the hall. My heels click on the tiled floor as I leave them behind. As I make my way to the library, a small smirk worms its way onto my face.
