Vic and I were strolling along in the park by the lake. It was still a little cold because it was still early, but I enjoyed the fresh air and happily took in my surroundings. To take my mind off Sam and Alex, I decided to change the subject.
"So. Tell me about Warped," I demanded, putting Vic on the spot. He screwed his face to one side thoughtfully and tapped his chin with his fingers.
"Well firstly, there is no way you'll need that scarf," he laughed and I elbowed him in the side. "No but seriously, it gets really hot out there so take plenty of sun cream and drink lots of water. It's so easy to get dehydration or sunstroke so you gotta be careful..."
"Okay mother," I said sarcastically, "I mean tell me about the bands and the people and the atmosphere!” I pleaded like a child.
“But I’ve told you a million times what it’s like!”
“I know,” I whined, “But tell me again,” I giggled.
Warped Tour was always a dream for me and hearing Vic talk about it was like a child hearing their favourite bedtime story.
“Okay then, uhm... Okay. The atmosphere is incredible... To see all the kids (and the older kids) – to see their faces, it’s amazing. They’re so alive, buzzing. Watching them all.. It’s like they’re a family. It’s like we’re a family. They all watch out for each other and for us and we do the same for them. To be able to meet the people who makes your dream possible everyday and tell you how much they love you... God, Ursula it’s the most wonderful feeling in the entire world! And the bands that you meet! Where do I even begin? You make so many friends from all over the world: USA, UK, Australia... You can learn so much from them and they can learn a lot from you. It’s incredible. And although you get tired and maybe a bit homesick, you always have your friends and they always know what’s best for you. Oh Ursula, you’re going to love it!” He laughed.
I gazed dreamily at the images Vic put in my head and I beamed at him. I linked arms with him and rested my head on his shoulder.
We walked around the lake in a comfortable silence and my thoughts whirred around my head like a thunderstorm. My thoughts were interrupted suddenly when I felt Vic gently nudge an elbow into my side.
“Don’t look now but...” Vic pointed into the distance. It took me a while to figure out what he was pointing at, but in the distance I saw Sam and Craig sitting on a park bench. My heart skipped a beat and I stopped dead in my tracks.
“You okay?” Vic gave me a concerned, yet slightly amused look.
“Yeah,” I lied. I fixed my jacket and pushed some loose strands of hair out of my face. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Vic rolled his eyes in my direction. Luckily, Sam hadn’t seen me yet and he was talking away to Craig.
“I think I’ll go say hi,” Vic beamed at me.
My mouth went into the shape of an O. Before I had time to protest or grab him and drag him back, he had already run over to Sam. And I was, pathetically and slowly with my short legs, running after him.
Why was I so afraid of seeing Sam? He was such a good friend and we got on so well. And I genuinely didn’t believe last night was a mistake, so what’s wrong with me?
Vic jumped into the arms of a very shocked Sam, but as soon as he knew who it was, his smile widened and he laughed. The three boys did some kind of bro-hug thing and very loudly greeted each other as I stood awkwardly playing with my fingers and looking at my feet.
That was, of course, before I felt a hand cup my chin and they brought my face up to their level. I was then greeted with the eyes of Sam.
His big and beautiful, bright eyes... His half-smile-half-smirk was very sexy and teasing. I blushed a bright crimson and looked at my feet again so he couldn’t see me.
“No, no, no,” he pulled my chin up again and kissed my cheek. “I love it when you blush.”
Vic and Craig seemed to have walked on ahead to leave me and Sam to catch up alone. Of course making the situation more awkward, well, for me anyway.
“Well that’s good because I can’t stop,” I said shyly and he hugged me.
I didn’t understand really what was going on or what Sam and I were. Friends? Girlfriend/boyfriend? Friends with benefits? I didn’t care, I just smiled into him and hid under his jacket.
“Why are you hiding from me?” Sam pulled a puppy face before his tone became serious. “Do you think last night was a mistake?"
“No... Do you?”
“No,” Sam smiled at me and I smiled back.
We stood staring at each other for several moments before we awkwardly laughed at the awkward situation.
“Let’s catch up with the others,” he suggested and took my hand in his.
“Lets,” I said blushing yet again.
I needed to stop doing this.
