"My love for you was bulletproof, but you're the one who shot me..." ~ Pierce The Veil, Bulletproof Love
"Ursula, we're here!" my bandmate, Mark, cried out.
I leaned over him to look outside the tiny airplane window to see the sun skimming over the top of high rise buildings.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts. We are about to make our descent into JFK airport," the pilot said on the overhead.
I squeezed Mark's hand and I took slow, deep breaths. It was only the band's second time in America and our first time ever in New York City. It's such a crazy place; full of crazy people. We adored it. It's nothing like home though. Nothing like good old Northern Ireland.
Vic, my cousin, loves America too. Then again, he grew up here and there is no place like home.
Since I was a teenager, whenever Vic went out on tour or had to go record with his band somewhere, I used him as a conscience, a guide. Whenever I was in trouble I'd ask myself "What would Vic do?" because Vic always knew the right thing to do.
He was my biggest role model. I looked up to him more than anyone and he's not just my cousin - he's my best friend. My brother.
Sometimes he took me out to venues and let me watch Pierce The Veil set up and Vic and we would jam together during sound checks.
I'm here today because of him. I founded Silver Light Asylum three years ago in our capital city, Belfast. Small compared to cities like New York, but with a mighty music scene. We played in local venues, supported local acts and got signed to Dirty Hit records.
All thanks to my cousin, Vic, who inspired me to play music.
I couldn't wait to see him. He was playing Warped with us and many more bands from all over the US and UK.
It was a crazy few weeks that followed at the Vans Warped Tour. I found myself choosing between someone I was convinced I was meant to be with and someone who I really wanted to be with. How in the world could I ever decide?
