The guys steam cleaned the floors in the suite and the hallway outside of it while I put on all the new linens, set up the crib and maid a play area for a baby. I also made a basket of toys like a gift basket. The room was a thousand times better than when I started. But I felt there needed to be something else. The Alpha wouldn't be here till mid-morning. So I knew I had time.
I went to the pack kitchen and rummaged through the pantry.
"Stealing a mid-night snack? I voice said from behind me. Wendy. One of the Omegas.
"It's only eight."
"So an eight o'clock snack?" She raised an eye brow.
"Hardly." I smiled. "I'm gonna make some cookies. Wanna help?"
"Really?" She asked. "You know I can't do cooking." She really couldn't. She burned sandwiches. Cold. Sandwiches.
"Maybe just hang out and lick to bowl?"
"I can do that until I have to go." She looked behind her. "It's crazy out there. And you better clean after yourself. Tina threw a major hissy today about the dishes not being put away after lunch clean up."
I pulled out all my ingredients that I needed and got to work and made Wendy filled me I on her new pursuit. She was an older unmarried Omega, but really kind... and horny. Or maybe she thinks a wolf won't take interest in her unless she puts out. Or both. The wolves always talk about true mates. And how it's sometimes the male wolves excuse to not commit to a female because they were waiting for their true mate. Every pack only had a few of them. But still pretty rare. Wendy was a catch true mate or not even though she can't cook.
I was putting the cookies in the oven and the thought occurred.
"Am I the pack pet?"
"What?" Wendy asked.
"One of the warriors told me I'm like the pack pet." Ironic right? She was thinking about it "Seriously?"
"Hear me out. You are the only human that lives here. If you disappeared, the pack would probably put out fliers to find you. You can't mindlink or communicate the way we do. And you are endeared to most of the pack." She had a point.
"Whatever."
"Are you mad?"
"No." I was a little mad.
"It's a good thing. I promise you. You are part of our pack without all the drama and baggage. The elders are eventually going to let you live outside the pack lands." I hoped so. But it also made me sad. I like my little life here.
"I'm not mad. It is sometimes gets to me not being a wolf."
"I get it. Do you know how it feels to be an Omega. A low rank female? It's nearly impossible to change our position because of bloodlines. YOU, a human can be anything in the world out there."
The buzzer went off and the first batch was done. I took them out of the oven and placed the next batch.
"Those smell so good. How do you do that?"
"I don't know. It's my magical human gift." I snickered at my joke. Just then, Ben walked in.
"I smell a Calla creation."
"And that's all you'll do. These are for the Alpha." I reach him and start pushing him out of the kitchen. He was a boulder. I know I wasn't moving him but he needed to feel my determination. "Get out." Wendy and Ben were laughing at me. He was over 6 feet and I was five feet two inches and three quarters. He reached over and grabbed 2 cookies. He popped one in his mouth in one shot and moaned.
"Did you have one of these yet?" He asked Wendy.
"Not yet." Wendy took a bit of one. "Calla, these cookies are amazing. If I cooked like this, I probably would find my mate."
I smiled at her complement. "Ben, I'll give you a few more if you can keep other strays out of the kitchen."
"Deal"
It was late when I finally made it home to my shed. Although it was late, I stayed up and washed my hair anyway. I knew there was no way I would wake up on time get the job done and the Alpha deserved a properly shampooed human chamber maid. Ready for bed, I snuggled in my covers and squeezed Mr. Fluffles. A teddy bear Beta Marc gave me when he inherited me. I looked at him. He was a source of comfort when I felt lost and alone. It gave me an idea.
I woke up in the morning surprisingly refreshed. I was even 15 minutes early to work without begrudging the 15 minutes of sleep I could have had. Instead of grabbing my file with my daily assignments, I went straight to the Alpha suite and double checked my work and made sure my basket of cookies was untouched. I pulled Mr. Fluffles from my bag and placed it in the crib. I knew it wasn't new. But I had a feeling, it was a little something special the room needed.
