Chapter Seven

Hailey's P.O.V.

I woke up to the sound of tapping at the window. It was too early, even for me. It was three o' clock in the morning and the moon was up, cresent shaped and the stars shone brightly. I looked out the window and opened it. There, was most gorgeous dragon I had ever saw. There it was in a beautiful shade of midnight blue. It had patterns in it's skin like the stars in the sky. Bright and glinting. It's eyes were smiling at me and it had a a dragon heart necklace nested in it's chest and something in it's mouth. I pet it gently and he dropped it in my hand. It was a matching necklace. How uncanny. I laughed slightly and examined it. A read heart laid in the middle of two dragons. I loved it. The dragon looked at me with, what seemed like intelligent eyes. He nudged it closer and I put it on watching this new friend of mine. The dragon then hopped down and went straight to my bed, curled up and looked at me again. I sat down on the bed and watched him. This little dragon crawled up to my side and then, morphed into a lovable dog. It looked back up at me smiling.

"Your kinda funny. " I said to it grinning. "How about I name you Midnight?" I asked him. He cuddled up even closer next to me and I took that as a yes.

"Sleep well Midnight." I whispered and went back to sleep. My dreams were interesting. I dreamt that I soaring through the sky. Flying through clouds and zooming through the depths of the stars. It was all too wonderful. Then, I was awoken by my usual. The morning light, shining brightly.

My new little dog/dragon was still sleeping. I stepped off my bed hoping not to wake him, but Midnight awoke as soon as I stood up. He trotted along side me, and was always by my side. It was so strange how Midnight had all of a sudden come to me. Yet, how could I be too suspicious about this bunch of adorableness. People stopped to pet Midnight. Whenever Midnight would get the chance, he would morph back into a dragon. Fly around me and try and blow, what I thought was fire. Little puffs came out of him, but were more icy and misty. It was a light blue and a looked like snow. Sometimes I would casually inquire Hermione about Midnight. I didn't tell her the truth, for reasons I couldn't put my finger on. I just felt like I couldn't tell anyone about what Midnight could do. Even to my best friend. When Midnight was in his dog form, he took shape of an adorable blue eyed bichon frise. The same color as the night sky when I first saw Midnight. Whenever light would hit his eyes, it would take shape like a cresent moon.

"Hey Dray!" I told Draco smiling walking next to him. Midnight still by my side. He barked at me and then he jumped into my arms.

"Hey Hail. Oh hello Midnight! How are you today?" Draco said to Midnight petting him.

"Yeah go and talk to Midnight and I'll leave you two alone." I teased.

"Very funny you silly girl. Just stay here with me." He said casually. All of a sudden butterflies came in my stomach. Why would I be so nervous? Still am though. I looked up at him and laughed. We chatted for a while and then parted ways when we reached the Great Hall. I wished I could spend more time with Draco. Plus, the whole Gryffindor and Slytherin rivalry really got in the way. So, today, I decided to go sit at the Slytherin table. Daring, I know. A little stupid, yes I know. Plus, if it works out, maybe these two houses wouldn't always fight. Sat right next to me like a little guard. Professor Dumbledore looked at me when I sat down at the Slytherin table. He raised his eyebrows but then smiled. His eyes rested on Midnight. Then, he gave out a little chuckle.

"Hailey? What are you doing here?" Draco asked me his eyes wide.

"Sitting with one of my best friends." I told him smiling. Dinner was actually kind of fun. Some Slytherins were decent and were fine with the fact I was a Gryffindor. I became friends with two Slytherin girls and surprisingly, Marcus Flint. Strange how things turn out. The girls names were Lillian and Anne. Lily had brown hair and brown eyes. She wasn't like a typical Slytherin. She was really kind. Anne, was punk with a soft side.

It all worked out other than a couple of stares. When I left the table, my new friends invited me to join them more often. I made a promise to do just that. Draco was just smiling through the whole night. Silly boy. Midnight made new friends as well. Hermione, Harry, and Ron met up with me after dinner with their eyebrows raised. Professor McGonagall called for me and I let my friends go ahead of me.

"Ms.Paige, Professor Dumbledore would like to speak to you in his office. And bring your... Um... dog along with you." Professor McGongall told me.

"Am I in trouble?" I asked a bit worried.

"Oh no not at all. Why would you be? Just something that concerns you. Oh, I almost forgot. Cockroach Cluster." She replied then walked away briskly. I looked at Midnight and he looked curious. I let him down. The halls were empty so Midnight changed into a dragon. He flew next to me and swirled around the hall. Always returning back to me. He'd stop occasionally to try and puff frost. Whenever he would fail, he'd look back at me like giving an apology. I'd laugh and he'd go right along flying. When we finally reached the gargoyle statue, I told him the password. He leapt away and Midnight and I went up the stairway. Before I even got to knock on the door, Professor Dumbledore's voice called out to me.

"Come on in Ms. Paige!" Professor Dumbledore called out. I took a small step into the office with Midnight behind me. I walked in and stood by his desk, unsure wether to sit down or stand.

"Hello Professor Dumbledore." I said to him smiling,

"Please have a seat! So now, our first topic of discussion, little Midnight here." He said with a twinkle in his eyes smiling down at Midnight.

"What about Midnight?" I asked him.

"Do you know what Midnight is?"

"A dragon dog?"

"Ahh no. I wish it was that simple. Actually, Midnight, is a frost dragon. A youngling in fact. Rare dragons. As you know, most dragons breathe fire and freeze in cold temperatures. Midnight, like some few, are different. Obviously. For what reason that Midnight came to you, is unknown. Don't you find it strange that such a rare creature, would come just for you?" He questioned me still smiling.

"No... But, when he came to me, he had this." I unclasped my necklace and showed it to Professor Dumbledore. He examined it carefully. He took a glance at the matching one on Midnight. He then raised it up using his wand.

"Is there something wrong with the necklace Professor?" I asked him.

"No... Just intruiging how Midnight could have gotten this." He said still looking at my necklace.

"Why sir?"

"This is made by one certain wizard, who needs not be mentioned. Magical creations of his own. Never bad, he wouldn't and couldn't do that. This necklace shows no harm at all. He never reveals what his creations can do. Only time tells. It is said that that wizard doesn't even know himself." Professor Dumbledore chuckled.

"In the meanwhile, I suggest you research these frost dragons. There are some things there I'm sure you would find helpful."

"Helpful in what sir?"

"Well... One must always be prepared." He said looking up and returning my necklace.

"Sir, about dinner--"

"It is alright Ms.Paige, yes, it is uncommon that someone would have the courage to do that. I am aware that you only knew Mr.Malfoy before entering the table. It is all fine Ms. Paige." He reassured me. I left the room with Midnight. Before we entered the Gryffindor Common Room, he morphed back. I went in and made some plans to go to the library for research with Hermione.
