Marcy peered down at the sparkling gem shards, turning them over in her hand as they glittered in the sun. She could feel Anne and Sasha's eyes on her as she examined the gems.
"I think.." Marcy said finally, "They have enough power in them to use the box again."
Anne and Sasha grinned at that, but Marcy stopped them.
"One more trip. We can get back home, but... we won't be able to get back here. Ever again. I mean, these slivers are crumbs of energy and this box needs a lot of power-" Marcy broke off, staring down at the gems and avoiding Sasha and Anne's eyes.
"Oh." Anne said simply, her grin vanishing.
"Well I guess we should say our goodbyes then. " Hop Pop said quietly, "We've kept you girls long enough, it's time you got home. "
"Yeah." Anne nodded, trying to hide her dismay.
The girls went off seperately to say goodbye to toads, frogs, and newts they had known throughout their short stay in Amphibia, then they went about their hardest goodbyes, saved for last.
Sasha went to say goodbye to Grime, while Anne went to bid farewell to the Plantars. Sasha and Anne were close to tears, but Marcy stood awkwardly by Olivia and Yunan.
It felt wrong, how Marcy didn't feel as upset as Anne or Sasha. She cared for the newts, but she had been so wrapped up in a fantasy she didn't really know them.
Someone had made three beautiful flower crowns, each made of delicate flowers the color of each of the trios calamity gems. Olivia and Yunan gently placed the green crown on Marcy's head.
"I guess this is goodbye. " Marcy said finally, "I came to this world only thinking of my self. It was wrong.. I wish I had been able to get to know you two a little bit better. "
"I think we all have a lot to learn from each other, Master Marcy. Don't be so hard on yourself." Olivia said.
"In a way, you helped us see what was important. " Yunan said, holding Olivia's hand.
Marcy stared at the two. If she had noticed one thing about them, it was their obvious love for each other. She was glad they had figured it out in the end. Marcy gave the two a bittersweet smile, then looked up at Andrias, who was intentionally avoiding her gaze.
"Goodbye.. Andrias. " Marcy said.
"Take care.. Kiddo. " Andrias said, looking down at the grass.
Marcy looked away, watching Sasha and Anne's painful goodbyes. Sasha tightly hugged Grime, who was using his hand to wipe away his tears as they fell.
Anne was hugging a sobbing Sprig, who clung to his big sister in their tearful goodbye. The rest of the Plantars joined in on the group hug.
Marcy finally felt the pain of leaving sink in, and she tightly hugged Olivia and Yunan one final time. She pulled away as Valeriana walked towards the tearful groups holding the box.
Anne pulled away from the Plantars, handing Valeriana the gem shards. She lined up the shards in the empty gaps on the boxes lid, opening the box one final time and creating a small, flickering portal.
Sasha, Anne, and Marcy grabbed each other's hands and walked towards the portal. They reached the portal and turned back to the crowd of amphibians who had gathered to say goodbye to them. The three girls gave a final goodbye, then Marcy and Sasha stepped through the portal, Anne lingered behind to say a final goodbye to Sprig.
Sasha and Marcy stepped through into the park they had originally opened the box in. Marcy squeezed Sasha's hand when she saw the tears still tracing Sasha's face.
"I can't believe it's over. " Sasha whispered.
"Me either. " Marcy said, still unable to believe it.
Anne stepped through the portal, wiping away a tear as it closed behind her. The three girls stood and stared at the portal for a long time.
"Let's go home. " Anne said finally.
