"I don't understand."

Catalina looked up from her book quizzically, "Don't understand what?"

"Aren't you a shield agent? Shouldn't you be trained on how to escape? Or is this your escape tactic?"

"This isn't an escape tactic," Caty said looking back down at her book. She had been here for over three weeks now. It was slightly amusing seeing someone so confused. However weird it may sound she had warmed up to Johann. He had been teaching her German and he had been letting her read. He she even struck up a conversation on world politics with her. Which she supposed was rather lame but hey it was something.

Johann pinched the bridge of his nose. He hadn't been this confused since his grandfather had pulled a coin out of his ear when he was four. He had spent the next several hours trying to pull a coin out of his ear after that. Maybe she was actually just trying to be kind. Why would someone be kind to him of all people? He stood up from the chair he had been sitting in and began to walk towards the door down the hall.

"Uh, Herr Schmidt?"

"Yes?"

"You forgot to put the field back up," she said.

"I never forget anything," he said and walked out of the hall.

Caty watched him leave. Was this a test? Well if it was she was going to pass it. She looked back down at her book and continued to study.

"If we do this what is in it for us?"

"Untold strength and power!" Said the black figure across from the two criminals.

"So let me get this straight. If we get you all these ingredients to mass produce this serum. You will use it on us?"

"Yes and you will be so powerful that you can rule a country."

"This sound a little cliche," said the second one cautiously.

The dark figure jumped to his feet and grabbed the man by the neck and hoisted him in the air. He gasped and clawed at his hand. The first man looked on stunned. Finally Black Death let go and the man's body fell in a crumpled heap. The first man bent over and looked at the lifeless corpse.

"What else do you need?" He said passively.

"People."

"It may take sometime," said the man kicking at his former companions body.

"Take your time," said Black Death, "I can wait."

"Shall we discuss further plans?"

"Yes let's."

"You are still here?!" Johann said not even trying to disguise his surprise.

"Yes," Caty said standing up and stretching.

"But- I-uh," he stammered. She smiled and shook her head.

"You have gone through so much you don't even believe in people anymore do you?"

He stared for a long time. "I stopped believing the day my sister died."

Caty looked at him sadly. That was the source of his anger. That was the source of his pain and it had torn his humanity apart. It wasn't gone for good though. She had known it was there since the beginning. When he hadn't shot her. Maybe just maybe it was starting to come through.
