You were walking around the backyard wearing your father's hat that was clearly too big for your head. You were looking for the most perfect grasses you could find. Your mother offered to help you, but when she said that all the grasses were the same you told her you would look for them by yourself, because she didn't get it.
You wanted to make a wedding ring for Wanda because you will ask her to marry you when she arrives later for a sleepover. You didn't actually know what marriage was, but you knew your mom and your dad were married and that was why they were always happy and were always spending time with each other. And that's exactly what you wanted to do with Wanda, so you would ask her to marry you. But you needed the perfect grasses because Wanda was really nice and you really liked her.
When you were satisfied with the ones you chose, you sat on the porch of your house and started making the ring. It took you a few hours and some frustrated unsuccessful attempts, but when you finally finish, you are really happy with the result.
After Wanda arrived, you two play with some of your toys and have dinner. When the two of you go to your room to watch a movie before bed, you decide it's the perfect time.
You pick the ring from where you were hiding it and show it to her.
- What is this? – She asks curiously, the movie completely forgotten by you both.
- I want to marry you. – You explain, leaning the ring towards her and she giggles.
- We can't get married, we are only twelve! – She says and you suddenly feel very sad. – But I really want to marry you, though. – She says after a while and you feel a wave of hope washing over you.
- Really? – You ask with a bright smile and she nods smiling in the same way.
- Ask me again when we're older and I'll say yes.
- Okay. – You say, placing the ring with all the care you have inside the first drawer on your nightstand. – Okay, I will.
You usually had mild winters on this side of the country. So when you wake up to a sunny day, you're not surprised.
Instead, you get ready for the day and after doing your chores on the farm you decide to work on your truck, using the pieces Maria gave you as a Christmas gift. It was almost lunch time when you heard a familiar voice behind you.
- Hey there, cowhand. – You turn smiling at the nickname and see Natasha on her uniform.
- Are you here to arrest me, officer? – You ask, cleaning your hands on a flannel and Nat chuckles.
- I'm here to see a friend. – You both smile and you tilt your head, signaling for her to follow you inside. In the kitchen, you pour the both of you some lemonade. You offer one of the glasses to Natasha, that accepts it gratefully and takes a sip from the cold drink. – How you doing?
- Good. The usual, really. – You say simply and Nat glances you a knowing look, but doesn't say anything. – What about you?
- Busy. – She answers and you notice she looks tired. – Stark was right, after all. The city did get more crowded.
You just nod and you both finish your lemonades in silence. That was one of the reasons you liked Nat so much. You appreciated the quiet, and so did she.
- Today is Tony's party. – She says, placing the glass on the sink. – Are you coming?
- I think I don't have much of a choice. – You say with not much enthusiasm as Nat walks back outside and you follow her.
