- Hey, (Y/n)! – You hear a happy voice calling you and you lift your head up to meet a smiling Monica walking towards you. You greet her with a smile as well. – My mom asked me to bring this to you.
- Thanks! That was very much needed. – You say, taking the tools from her hands and she nods with a smile.
- So... I was wondering if you'd like to have some coffee later, maybe? – She asks and you swallow dryly at the invitation.
Monica has been asking you out for a while now and you always tried your best to make up good excuses so you don't hurt her feelings. It's not that you didn't like her. Monica was fun, and pretty, and one of your closest friends now. But she wasn't Wanda. It's been almost three years now, but no matter how hard you tried, Wanda was always the one on your mind.
- I... I can't, actually. I'm gonna get some of my stuff from my parent's house after work. If I keep that mess for another day I'm pretty sure my mother will hit me with a broomstick. – You joke and Monica chuckles, but you can sense a little bit of sadness in her expression. You bite the inside of your cheek, trying to stop the words from coming but they do anyway. – But we could totally do it on the weekend if you're free.
- Sure, I'd love that. – Monica answers immediately, trying to disguise her excitement and you feel the guilt sinking on your stomach. You say your goodbyes and when Monica leaves, you get back to work.
Later that day, you walk into your home - well, now your parent's home - to pick up some of the things you will need in your new apartment. You notice your parents talking on the kitchen and then going quiet the minute you enter the room.
- Is everything okay? – You ask, your brows frowned in concern. Both your parents look at you with expressions you don't really understand, but for sure weren't good ones.
- Iryna just called. – Your mother says, her eyes never leaving yours and you hold your breath. The thought that something might have happened to the Maximoffs made your heart ache. - Wanda got engaged.
Your heart dropped. The whole world seemed to spin as the words of your mother sink in like stones on your chest. Wanda was getting married?
- I'm sorry, kid. – You eventually hear your father's voice but you shake your head repeatedly.
- Why? That's great news. I'm really happy for her. - You lie, but none of them believes it. No one ever could ever believe that lie but you had to say it anyway. Otherwise you would break down and that was the last thing you wanted to do. You feel your body starts to shake and your sight gets more and more blurred as the tears start to form on your eyes. - I just came by to get some stuff.
You mumble and before they can say anything, you storm out of the kitchen and walk clumsily towards your bedroom. When you close the door, you surrender to the sadness.
You sit on the floor, crying desperately as thoughts of Wanda overwhelmed your mind. All the memories, all the promises, all the stolen kisses and accomplice looks. You loved her. You loved her with everything you had and everything you didn't. But you never told her that. And she would never know because now she was getting married to someone that wasn't you. She had your heart on the palm of her hands. You gave it to her the moment you met her and you forgot to take it back when she left. That was on you.
You're not a fool, you knew she would move on eventually, and you had a feeling (hope, maybe) that so would you. But you just wanted to be the first one to do so.
