CHAPTER SIX ──── 𝗠𝗬 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗬𝗢𝗨

❝ i desire to stay by your side, for as long as you'll have me. you are the one that my heart beats for." ❞

THE MAROON HAIRED MAN stood outside the infirmary in the Demon Slayer Corps where he had hurriedly brought his battered partner, eyes closed in deep thought. His long maroon locks gently moved in sync with the wind kissing his fair skin. His expression smooth as a rock, indicating no emotion as always — yet his heart in turmoil.

Time had long passed since the last time he felt such a plethora of emotions as he did in this very moment. The most prominent one being his overwhelming worry for his injured partner, the woman that had captured his heart. He really thought he'd lost her in that instant — had he been a second late he would've lost the woman who's stirred his heart into beating once again. Yoriichi is well aware of the dangers the life of a demon slayer brings.

Yet he could not bear the thought of her dying.

It's only brought clarity to him that his feelings for her have blossomed beyond friendly sentiments — he saw her as a woman, the woman that he wanted to keep by his side as his companion and lifelong partner, the woman who makes his heart race miles a minute.

Everyday his feelings for her would only grow stronger, the flames of his passion for her setting his heart alight with life and a determination to live and breathe for protecting her.

He hasn't felt this way since the passing of his wife, but he only felt blissful. Blissful that he has another chance at loving once again. He's so thankful it's her.

"I will not let this chance trickle away from my fingertips. I will protect you, my beloved Hikari. That is a promise," Yoriichi proclaims quietly, the corners of his lips turning up into a ghost of a smile.

"My, my. You reek of lovesickness, brother." A voice drawls sarcastically, causing Yoriichi to calmly open his eyes. His arms crossed behind his back, he turns to meet a figure with dark purple irises clad in a purple-and-black patterned kimono.

"Michikatsu, I only worry for my lady. I have yet to hear news of her condition. I know you worry for her as I do, or I would not be seeing you visiting her often as well. Unless I am incorrect, brother?" Yoriichi asks cooly which earns a grumble from Michikatsu.

"I do care for her in my own way," Michikatsu scowls, displeased that his brother saw through him effortlessly. He wouldn't ever admit it out loud but seeing Hikari all battered and injured terrified Michikatsu — her limbs' movements limp, rag doll like. Her clothing caked in dried crimson, the fabric torn in some areas. He'd never forget the look of fear his brother's maroon eyes held — that fear of history repeating itself once more. The events replayed themselves over and over again in Michikatsu's mind, a feeling twisting within his chest that only made his scowl darken further.
