a dream?

They settled down onto the bench together, watching as the clouds moved past overhead, making the sun shine brightly through.
"I'm getting cold," Tara complained. Darcy pulled out her jacket from her bag. "You want this?" She held out the jacket to Tara and she nodded eagerly, taking it and putting it on. She shivered.
It was still warm enough that they were comfortable with their clothes but not enough to feel entirely comfortable.
A few minutes later, Tara started dozing, leaning against Darcy's shoulder.

Darcy shifted her weight so that her arm rested across Tara's shoulders. As she watched Tara fall asleep, she couldn't help but smile. They sat like that for a little bit longer, listening to the sounds of the leaves rustling and birds chirping.
Darcy didn't know how long they stayed there but eventually, they had to go back home.  She picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. She offered a hand to Tara, helping her stand up. She was surprised when Tara took it, letting herself be pulled to her feet.
"Come on," Darcy said softly, holding Tara's hand as she led her away from the bench and towards home. She wanted to keep her hand in Tara's even after she let go.
When they finally reached their front door, Darcy fished her house key out of her pocket. Once she opened the door, she stepped inside and gestured for Tara to follow her.
Tara did, walking into the hallway and standing awkwardly by the door.
Darcy turned around slowly, looking at Tara expectantly. The girl shifted her weight.
"Um…" she stuttered, looking everywhere but at Darcy.
"What is it? Do you want some tea or something? Or would you rather just sit in the living room and watch a movie?"

She thought about inviting Tara to join her but decided against it. She wasn't sure if she could deal with another one of those awkward silences where neither of them knew what to say. She also knew that she'd probably end up talking about something stupid again. She'd never met someone who hated silence so much. But she also hadn't been expecting to ever meet anyone as interesting as Tara and she wanted to try and make her stay and enjoy their time together.

"No!" Tara shook her head vigorously, smiling slightly before turning her face away to look down at her shoes. "Well, I mean, maybe?"
"Okay." Darcy smiled gently, walking back over to the couch and sitting down, gesturing for Tara to join her. She looked around for something to distract them, settling on Netflix and grabbing her laptop off the coffee table before returning to the couch.

Tara followed her, sitting down and picking up a remote from the table next to her.
The two of them spent most of the afternoon watching movies, commenting on the characters' antics. Neither of them spoke much at first but eventually, as they got used to each other, they found themselves talking more than usual. Their conversation ranged from movies to books, from food to music, and from things in life, to their families, their lives, and everything else.
By the time the sun set outside, they'd grown tired and sleepy. They lay down side by side  on Darcy's sofa, facing each other, arms wrapped around each other.

"Hey, Darce." Tara nudged her with her foot, smiling at her sleepily.
Darcy blinked a few times, shaking her head awake. "Hey, Tabs," she replied groggily. Tara giggled, shifting closer to her. Darcy closed her eyes again and snuggled closer to her, placing a gentle kiss against Tara's forehead.
She felt Tara shift again and she opened an eye to see her staring down at her.

Hi," Tara whispered.
"Hi." Darcy smiled up at her. She leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss against Tara's lips, then resting her cheek against her chest. Her eyes fluttered shut again and a contented sigh left her lips.

It seemed that Tara didn't mind. Her arms tightened around Darcy, pulling her impossibly close.
Darcy woke up with a start a few hours later,  breathing heavily and wide awake, having had a nightmare.
She stared out at the night sky, trying to calm down. It wasn't exactly unusual for her nightmares to come back. In fact, she had dreams almost every night. And it wasn't unusual for them to include people she loved.

But this dream… This one had felt different. For one thing, this dream featured the person who had given her the best present she had ever received. There wasn't any other person in the entire world who could have given her what she'd gotten from her family. Not even her mother.
That was until she remembered that she was happy. That she had the love of her life laying beside her.

And she was happy, wasn't she? Really?
