I stumbled and started racing out of the building.

Hurry.

Hurry.

There wasn't much time left.

Kitsune followed closely behind, without saying anything. Silently, we sprinted toward the black swamps. Almost immediately, we knew that we had arrived from the eerie purple mist surrounding us. The stinging gas made our eyes burn and water.

Our speed increased as the mist got thicker. Faster, faster. Near the edge was a clear blue lake, completely out of place in the frightful swamp. Here goes nothing, I plunged in. Why you ask?

I don't really know myself. All I knew was, I needed to find something...badly. And that something was in the water. Simple.

Surprisingly, the water was ice cold compared to the sunny weather outside. I almost regretted diving in. Key word: almost. The need to find that something was stronger than the need to get out.

A splash was heard somewhere in the back. Kitsune? I turned and was instantly face to face with a stick thin figure with sunken black eyes and bone white strands of hair. Oh my gfdjk.

I would have screamed, but then I'd run out of oxygen. I resorted to opening my mouth again and again.

Without sound, without any bubbles.

Nothing.

I was shocked to the point I didn't even have the sense to swim away.

 I'm stupid, I know.

But isn't everyone sometimes?

For a minute, I thought that I'd get eaten or have my soul sucked, but luckily, none of that happened. The dead body, I soon discovered, just floated creepily away. Unmoving and just being it 's usual...self.

A hand suddenly grabbed onto my shoulder just as I was about to go on my merry way.

What the hell?!

I glared when I saw it was only Kitsune and not some other dead body.

You scared me to death! I mentally screeched to Kitsune.

I braced myself, expecting a snarky comeback, but nothing came.

He ignored me like the best friend he was.

Jerk face.

I made faces at him and swam in the other direction.   A blank look was plastered on his face while he floated carelessly farther and farther away from me. Will he be alright? He sure doesn't look that way... Against my pride, I swam back and tugged on his sleeve.

Come on, I grumbled.

He widened his eyes for a fraction before finally seeming to get it together, putting on a firm facial expression. Now, isn't that so much better?

We both swam in the direction of the light that appeared under the water, transfixed.

"Congrats, young ones. You have passed the first trial: friendship. Continue on." the voice ended abruptly.

It took a while before the true meaning of it registered in my mind.

...

So it was all a test?!

But...could that even be considered one? Beats me.

We were sucked into the light almost the instant we touched it. My body was  contorting and twisting like being inside a malfunctioning blender. Well, how I imagined being inside a malfunctioning blender would be like.

The force pushing us finally slowed and we were spit out. The shove made us  plop face first onto a soft squishy floor.

Eeeeuuugh. What was that smell? Yuck. I plugged my nose until the smell reduced to a minimum.

How could- what? I looked at the floor with an expression of disgust spreading across my face. The green floor was in fact, made out of seaweed. Slimy wimey seaweed. I don't like seaweed. PERIOD.

The stuff is stinky.

Mortifying.

Also very sickening.

And did I say it was stinky?

Uh huh. You see my issue?

Kitsune looked about as disgusted as...wait. Never mind, he's okay with it. Go figure.

Take one look at his emotionless face and you know that he doesn't give a shit about anything.

Team Hate Seaweed anyone? No? Oh, okay...

Moving on for the hundredth millionth time, I picked myself up from the floor and wiped the disgusting gunk off my weirdly dry clothing. MAGIC.

But it's not like I was a stranger to it. Stop acting like a little kid in a candy store, Kasumi.

Kitsune started padding toward the barnacle covered arc, making little slapping noises as he did so.

I followed behind, scrunching up my face and wondering how the heck my Kitsune managed to stand the pungent odor that grew stronger every step we took.

I turned my head to look at the many species of starfish hanging off the walls, unmoving. Poor starfish.

The passage seemed to go on forever. The second I thought we had reached the end, I would let out a whoop of joy, before being disappointed.

We walked for 15 minutes before realizing that we've been played. Damn it! We walked around this already!

I turned and noticed the walls on our sides creeping closer and closer...
