isla hamilton
my parents never come up to cousins the first week of summer, so of course, i was extremely surprised to see their brand new ashton martin convertible in the driveway.jeremiah dropped me off at my house and i looked at me in confusion, "who's car is that?"
i turned to face him, "my parent's."
his eyes furrowed, "i thought they don't come until fourth of july?"
"they don't."
jere began to say something else, but then my parents opened the front door. they had huge smiles on their faces, "surprise!"
i laughed nervously, "hi guys?" i took a peak back at jeremiah who was sat frozen in the car. he had never met my parents before. i turned back around, "what are you guys doing here so, um, early?"
my mom stepped out from the door way and engulfed me in a hug, "is it a sin to have missed my beautiful baby girl?"
i warmed into her touch, "i guess not."
the awkwardness had went away. i've always loved my parents, they were amazing and had always given me an amazing life, it's just recently things between the two of them had changed.
"so, who's that cute boy in the car over there?" my mom whispered. my eyes immediately went to jeremiah's. i ended the hug and ushered jeremiah to step out of the car, he followed and rushed to my side.
"this is jeremiah fisher." i looked to jere, "these are my parents, rebecca and howard hamilton."
my mom smiled warmly at jeremiah, "you can just call me becky!"
my dad stood awkwardly at the door step, "you can just call me howard." he looked at me and waved, "hi dad." my dad quickly said his goodbyes before going inside.
i turned back to my mom and she already started bombarding jeremiah with questions. he seemed interested, but i could tell he had somewhere else to be, "mom let jere go, i think he needs to head home."
jeremiah smiled gratefully, "i do. it was nice meeting you, becky." he winked and made his way to his car.
my mom sighed happily, "it's so great to be back!"
i sighed along with her, but not in her happy way.
the three of us sat on our back deck doing our own thing. i was reading a book, my mom was reading a magazine, and my dad was staring out into the middle of nowhere.
we have been sitting out here for about two hours now and it had been silent the entire time.
my mom decided to break that silence, "i stopped by the country club on my way back."
i took a moment to notice the way she used 'my' instead of 'our,' meaning that she came back alone.
"oh really? for what?" i asked. i wasn't really interested but i kept my ears opened anyway.
my mom put down her magazine and gave me the brightest smile, "you're going to be a debutante!"
i dropped my book, "no way." i shook my head and laughed dryly, "no way in hell!"
"language." my mother scolded. her eyes rolled, "you're doing this, isla."
i groaned, "why? you've never made me do this before. she just smiled and went back to reading
silence surrounded us once more until she interrupted again, "we will be going shopping tomorrow. and find yourself a date."
i couldn't stand being out there any longer, "i'm going inside." and i got up, and walked to our home cinema and started to make an icee and popcorn. i found a movie and made myself comfortable on the sofa.
as i took my sips of my icee, three pumps of blue raspberry with two pumps of cherry and a splash of coke, and ate my extremely buttered popcorn, i sat there for the entire day, binging the harry potter series.
