Chapter 14

Zahaire's pov

A feeling of forboding came across me and I slowed my steps, not everyone was in a hurry to leave when their shift ends in the morning but I was. We needed a few more posts to continue the small shelter that we have managed to construct so we could have a small dwelling to protect us from the elements of nature. Someone poked their head around the gate then drew back, I looked about for something anything in the dim morning light.

Seeing nothing to use as a weapon, I turned and walk to the other exit of the newspaper company while calling Richard. This is most definitely my last time here I thought vexedly nearing the side entrance, a fist fly towards me and I backed up skidding just in time. The fist held what looked like a sharp blade and the person came at me swinging wildly.

I sighted the wild blows until I saw an opening and thumped beneath the hand holding the weapon and send my left foot hard into the person's abdomen. They were rendered unbalanced and I took the opportunity to grab at the mask covering the person's face, it revealed Tomas a young man who was said to have been in a relationship with Gonzalez.

With the deep anger that had grown inside of me I puffed his chest real hard, he crouched and I rained punches on the side of his face along with my knee striking him anywhere I could. I was pulled away by the night security and he was accosted by some of my co-workers who were now gathered around wanting to know what had transpired.

After telling them what had happened I went on home with Richard. "You should have just gutted him," he snapped when I told him what had occurred.

"The polices are in his pocket, I hate all of them," Richard added.

We discuss the car insurance and other business pertaining to the car and then he left, I worked with Ethan and his brothers for two hours and a half then got ready for work. At least we won't get wet I thought as the rain began to drizzle, I hugged my mother who walked up to me just as I was leaving. She was happy to have a roof over our heads regardless, we went into the car when Richard arrived and went to our seperate jobs.

I went to sleep when I got home pondering if I should go back to my night job or not, I decided not to and after I ate my dinner I went to help Ethan to mix the concrete he was using to make the steps.

"Zahaire, I think I might have to quit my job," Ethan whispered to me.

I looked at him questioningly. "I-I, I really don't trust a new worker that has been hired to work with us, not only does he gives me the creeps but one of my friend said he has been asking questions about me. Questions like where I live and who I was related to, tsk," he explained depressively.

"I was attacked by Tomas on my way out of my work place yesterday morning and I've asked Richard to keep a close eye on my mother. I told him to collect her at the gate of her workplace and told her not to come out before he comes for her," I told him confidentially.

He rubbed his hand through his hair in a rage and said angrily, "you should have just killed him, oh Gezas christ I'm so tired of him. Doesn't he have another rich dude fucking out his ass? Why can't he just die and leave us alone?"

He sighed calming himself down. "I know you don't want to go to prison but can we just kill him and dump his useless body somewhere. Tsk," he vented.

Truth is I've thought about doing so many times, but it isn't easy to kill someone like Tomas. With gays and queer people claiming they're in danger in all the caribbean islands if you get caught you could get life imprisonment and face terrible experiences inside prison. These fuck up justice systems are just in place to strangle the good left in peoples heart.

I went to sleep with a lot on my mind and I sharpened the knife my father had given me years ago before he went to prison. "Protect your family at all costs, he had said.

While Ethan and his brothers went to chop posts to build a fence, I and my brother spend the Saturday morning chopping and moving away some bushes to make yard space. I tie up a clothes line and my little sister wanted to wash same time, I look over to where Ethan's families were using the hose that was joint from far through the bushes and barely running. I sighed and looked at her, she sighed and leaned heavily on our wooden dwelling.

I reasoned with Richard on my way to work and we stopped at the atm where I withdraw some money, I gave him some to buy a hundred and fifty feet length water hose and some locks, screws, hinges among some other things. While I was at work or asleep I wanted us to be safe and I have a great idea for a fence, we live a short distance from the road way and have an advantage of seeing through the trees.

A week later we all attended my sister's graduation, Sharrie was sad that she hadn't attended but happy for Shameka. I sent her all the pictures we had taken and she got emotional and began to sob. She told me that Janay had mastered in her grades and I was shocked, I was happy she did but that could make things change.

I could hardly sleep that night on the new comfortable mattress, I was worried Janay will get a better paying job and move on with her life. I was happy for her and felt like a failure to her and our daughter. I sent her a text wishing her a happy birthday early the next morning but got no response even the following day.

I got a job for Zavian at my work place and he started to work the same day he came for his interview, we went to work together and leave together, it felt great to have his company. He was inexperienced and asked me a lot of questions which I was happy to answer explaining in details, I felt a little jealous that he had went to college and I still couldn't as yet. I was proud of him and while we waited on his results I knew in my heart that he did well and it comforts me.

It was mainly saving for the flight my father said he was trying to get us on, I was glad to go and renew my passport for more than one reasons. If the company didn't re-assigned me back so I could apply again for my visa, my dad promise that he was seeking out a job for me. I will be out of Guyana but far away from Janay and my daughter that I longed to meet with all my heart.

I finished dealing with some important documents and stood at a curb waiting on Richard when a sexy lady walked passed me, she turned slightly and winked when we made eye contact with each other. She was gorgeous and shapely and I smirked she obviously like the six feet blue eye mix male she's looking at. I did not get involved with Guyanese women, they only wanted money and normally have two to three men dating. Richard came and she tried to get in the taxi with me, but he stopped her telling her he wasn't working.

It would be really nice to get some sexual pleasure, but I allowed Richard to drive away there was no space in my life for complications and I might as well keep myself. I push the thought of sexual fulfillment from my mind and me and Richard spoke about the injustices we have been dealt until he dropped me off at my home in the trees as I call it.

Ethan's older brother Sceffrey was carrying building blocks from about a thousand piled at the front, he smiled widely when he saw me while I stood staring at the blocks in shock.

"My boss and good friend heard about our situation, I was surprise when he told me to drive the truck home and unload them. Hi hi, I had no other choice but to thank them, some things will be coming from the hardware and he said I should see if I can manage to build," he explained happily.

"Great," I told him smiling.
