I was doing my best not to eavesdrop in the conversation Bucky was having with his therapist today. I thought I had finally convinced him to open up to her more. I wanted him to work through his past and I could only do so much. I had asked him the other day if he'd mentioned anything about us to her. He of course said no, why he mentions the good in us. He didn't need to talk about what he thought. It wasn't all good though. Our eighty plus years together haven't all been good for us. We didn't always remember we were lovers at first.
"Do you have anybody other than Sam, James?" his therapist asks. "You need people in your life."
"I have a person," he says softly as I hear through the wall. "A person I don't feel comfortable talking about."
"Why is that?" she asks softly. "Maybe that person shouldn't be in your life if you can't talk about them to your therapist. Does Sam know about this person?"
"Oh yeah," he says with a soft chuckle. "They are great and I don't want you to tear apart my past with this person because we did some bad shit together."
"So you still are in contact with Skylar?" she asks softly, but her voice was stern as usual. "HYDRA's second best asset to you. The one that controlled you and half the carnage you caused and are still dealing with today."
"She was actually their best asset, not me," he says softly and I chuckle softly to myself. Always trying to boost me up. "She was in my life before HYDRA, you know."
"But she was the one that activated you for all your missions, or is that just a lie from your file?" she says softly, prying information out of him. "Did she not force you to do all these things you regret to this day?"
"She wasn't under her own control," he snaps, his voice starting to drip with agitation. "This is why I didn't want to bring her up to you. She is the best thing in my life and the only thing I care about more than anything."
He was getting angry and I didn't want this. I flick my wrist opening the door stepping into the room. Bucky doesn't even flinch when I walk into the room knowing eventually I'd make my way into this session in the back of his mind. Though his therapist jumped startled.
I look at the woman, "if you are going to talk harshly about me, at least say it to my face." I flick my wrist letting the door shut sharply behind me as I walk further in. Bucky stands slowly, "you didn't have to interrupt." I smiled up at him, "I did. You were getting upset."
He leans down and kisses me softly, saying to my lips, "I'm okay."
I kiss him back softly. His therapist spoke in front of us, "please, both of you sit." I sit on the couch next to Bucky and she speaks softly, "I see that you have a special person in your life after all, James."
"No one calls him James, except me," I say looking at her. "You may be his doctor, but he prefers to be called Bucky by everyone else." He places his left vibranium hand on my knee giving it a light squeeze. I look at him, "what? She was being rude about me. I don't appreciate it. I'm putting her back into line. She knows to call you Bucky, she is calling you James to get on your nerves, but you ignore it."
She looks at me folding her arms on the notebook she has in her lap, "so Skylar Rogers, or what people called you before was Winter, correct? Which do you prefer?"
"It's not Rogers, technically it's Barnes," I said looking at her, pursing my lips together in a small smirk. "I mean technically we've been together since 1938..." I look over at Bucky, "so technically that makes us together eighty-five years."
