jeremiah grabbed a can of beer and watched stella grab a solo cup. even though he was the designated driver, he was sure that he could handle one drink, but just to be sure, he poured half of it into stella's empty cup.

he took a long, satisfying sip from his can. "are you gonna try and find your secret stud or are you gonna stick with me?" he asked, reminding stella of one of the reasons why she came in the first place.

"stella!" a voice caught their attention. jeremiah mirrored stella, stumbling around in a circle trying to find where the voice had come from. "stella, over here."

jeremiah watched stella's eyes relax as she spotted a boy in the distance. he watched how she admired somebody.

somebody other than me, he thought. jere, stop. seriously.

jeremiah smirked. "ahh, it's good to put a face on the secret stud," he teased her.

"shut up," she replied, playfully elbowing his side. she left to talk to the new boy. "daniel!"

daniel, huh, he thought.

jeremiah's face enlightened in amusement. "oh and he has a name!" he chuckled.

stella turned back around to jokingly flip jeremiah off then spun back around to talk to daniel. jeremiah just smiled at the ground and laughed to himself. he felt an unsettling feeling in his stomach.

i'm not jealous, he thought to himself, scoffing out loud. i'm not.

"what are we scoffing at?" conrad asked from behind jeremiah. he was still looking for someone, probably nicole.

jeremiah tore his eyes away from stella. "uh, nothing. just the... weather tonight. it's brutal," he lied terribly.

conrad looked behind him. "is that the guy stel was talking about?"

jeremiah pretended to just find out about the guy. "oh, what? that's so weird. i didn't even see her talking to him."

andy and steven stumbled over to conrad and jeremiah. "hey, did you guys see stel and that kid?" steven giggled.

"i don't like him," andy said, already sounding a little drunk. he was probably a lightweight, just like steven. "he's... sea lion."

jeremiah laughed at how he wasn't making any sense. andy and steven kept talking about sea lions and conrad had left the conversation a while ago to find that girl. jeremiah found himself watching stella and daniel again.

steven and andy's laughter got louder as they watched stella interact with a boy. they pretended to throw up in their mouths, making jeremiah tell them to shut up. it's not like he wanted to hear what stella and that boy were talking about. he didn't, definitely not. conrad was minding his own business. he had finally found that girl, nicole, and now, they were talking behind the other three nosy teenagers.

stella turned around and spotted the four of them spying, making steven and andy pretend to talk about anything else. conrad started making out with the girl he was talking to. and jeremiah quickly whipped his head in a different direction and pretended to admire the sky.

not long after, two boys had caught jeremiah's attention. "no, yeah, she's definitely hot," one of them said. "but she's, like, a slut. you know?"

"yeah, yeah... but, like, i'd still hit that," the other boy added.

jeremiah cringed. he would never talk about women that way. ever. he felt terrible for whoever they were talking about.

"she's always hanging around those four boys too," the first one mentioned. "she's probably fucked at least one of them."

the other boy scoffed. "look at her. talking at another guy tonight."

"i didn't see her as the type of girl who would go for daniel but whatever," one of them said. "that whole group is mad weird."

daniel. isn't that the guy stel was talking about? jeremiah thought. are they talking about her?

"hey, how much do you bet that i'll get to third base with her tonight?" the other boy smirked.

"nah, daniel's got her tonight," the first one said.

the other one groaned then started chuckling. "i can't believe she's talking to him and wearing another guy's shirt."

my shirt, jeremiah thought.

he couldn't listen to this much longer. "hey, uh, who are you guys talkin' about?"

"stella. stella davis- hey. don't you hang with her?" the first guy laughed and nudged his friend.

his friend mirrored his laughter. "aye, you can tell us. how far have you gone with her-"

"stop talking about her like that," jeremiah said, irritatedly.

one of the boys smirked and oohed. "ooh, and what are you gonna do about it?" the other boy laughed loudly.

jeremiah rolled his eyes. "this is such bullshit. you guys don't know anything about her, so shut up. got it?"

"what's your obsession with this girl, man?" one of the guy's teased him.

the other guy chuckled and shoved jeremiah's shoulder. "she probably fucked him and now he's emotionally attached."

the two boys laughed loudly in his face. people were starting to circle around them.

jeremiah was starting to get worked up. "shut the fuck up! what's your problem?"

"oh, come on, buddy. admit it. you're jealous!" the guy shouted, attracting more people.

jeremiah stood up straighter and scoffed. "why would i be jealous?"

good question, jere, he thought to himself. why have you been feeling this way all night?

"just admit it, man. all she will ever be is a slut," the other guy said, dragging out every word. he threw his hands in the air and laughed. "she's worthless."

that was it. jeremiah couldn't listen to them talk about stella like that anymore. she didn't deserve any of this. she was a beautiful girl who didn't just hook up with anyone like those boys had said. she was smart... to an extent. she cared about the people that she loved. jeremiah admired everything she did

and that's why he threw the first punch.
