"Avis Caddell you'd better be up or you can kiss those extracurriculars of yours goodbye." Odette said sternly knocking on the door, ignoring the "Do not disturb" sign that Avis had put on it. "I'm up Odette!" Avis snapped, still laying flat on her back, spread out like a starfish. "Good. Because we're leaving in an hour." Her Aunt responded and walked away.

The teen let out a breath she didn't know she had been holding. "This is it." She muttered, "First day of freshman year." The girl then cringed at how she sounded. 'Now I just sound like some whiny main character in all of those high school romance books or movies'

Deciding she couldn't put it off any longer, Avis got up and got ready for the day. Taking out a black turtle neck and some jeans – as well as her undergarments, the teen walked out of her room and across the hall to the bathroom, where a long hot shower awaited her. Stripping from her clothes and turned on the shower.

Avis studied herself in the mirror as the water grew hot. Gently running her fingers over her smooth tan skin, a few blemishes and scares could be seen starting at her shoulders and some on her cheeks among the freckles that littered most of her body. She combed her fingers through her dark brown hair, trying to decide whether or not to take the extra ten minutes to give it a well-deserved scrubbing. Rubbing the morning gunk out of her unnaturally bright yellow eyes, Avis finally stepped into the steaming shower and let the water wake her up.

"And you know to go straight to the principal's office, not go wanderingaround and hiding someplace, correct?" Odette said for the umpteenth time asthey pulled up to Avis's new school: Happy Harbor High School (the cheerinessin the name alone made her want to be sick). "I know Odette." Avis sighed, hereyes darting around, trying to look at the multiple bodies – or classmates that were currentlylazing about in front of the school as they waited for their buddies or for thebell to ring.

Odette pulled into one of the parking spaces and let out a breath. "Well, this is it. Ready to go?" she asked looking at her niece a fake cheeriness dripping from her voice. Avis sat still, her eyes focused on her feet, her hands bawled together.

She didn't want to admit that she was nervous. "Hey," her Aunt said gently, "I know this is scary, a new school, new people. But they are going to love you. Just smile and be friendly and I'm sure by the end of the day, you'll have so many friends you won't know what to do with yourself."

Avis didn't say anything in response. In fact, she didn't know what to say. After a long period of silence, Odette manually unlocked the car – signaling that it was time for Avis to go. The teen pulled the hood to her short-sleeved hoodie over her head, her eyes downcast. Stepping out of the car with her bag the teen couldn't help but look back helplessly at her Aunt who gave her a small nod and a thin smile mouthing - "You got this."

The teen took a deep breath and turned to look at the campus in front of her and for one of the first times in her life, she felt small.
