Robin Chang arrived in the story pretty much fully-formed. The first scene I wrote with her was the scene where she's being chased by Sonia and her cronies, right before their fatal run-in with the creature. I knew how to write her immediately. Confident, sassy, a little odd, and very tough.
As I was writing her, I realised that she was a lot like Chuck in a lot of ways, and so I started getting excited about the idea of writing scenes with the two characters bouncing off each other. Of course, that was before I had the 'genius' idea of killing Chuck off before they ever got a chance to meet in person!
Fortunately, I think this worked out in the best possible way for the story. As Ellie says herself, Robin provides an opportunity for her and Sten to grieve the loss of their friend while also neatly taking his place in the narrative.
