THE Creature COLLECTION
Of course, the main character in PSYCHOSAPIEN is the psychosapien itself--affectionately referred to throughout the story as, simply, 'the creature'.
The creature was based on a number of sources. First of all, I wanted a dinosaur. I was watching a lot of Jurassic Park/World at the time and that was the first kindling of an idea for me: write something with a dinosaur in it!
The only problem with dinosaur bad-guys is that they're just animals. Hungry, bloodthirsty predators with no real mind of their own. I wanted an antagonist that would also taunt its prey. Call its victims on the phone and tell them to watch their backs. That's one of my favourite bits in Little Shop of Horrors, when Audrey II dials Audrey I on the phone and starts singing to her. She thinks it's Seymour, but it's not--it's the man-eating plant, luring her to her (almost) death!
So I wanted something like that--ridiculous, but still kind of plausible. Like, if the dinosaur can talk, then why can't he also pick up a phone and give somebody a call?
So that's where the Ghostface of it all came from.
So now I had a cool dinosaur serial-killer who makes taunting phone calls with his victims. And that pretty much set me up for how I wanted to tell the story. In the first scene, we hear the creature's voice before we ever see it. And later, the creature phones in to the radio station to talk to (and threaten) Chuck. This was one of my favourite aspects of writing the story, because it's the kind of thing you don't get to do very often with this kind of 'monster movie' type of story.
