Lugging my heavy suitcase to my Jeep, I look up at the dark clouds in the sky that threaten a storm. Not the best weather for driving. I heave the suitcase into the trunk of the car, slamming the trunk shut. I dust my hands off. I turn back to the front door, seeing my dad standing there leaning against the doorway. He stared off into the sky, a nervous look in his eyes. He chewed his lip, and I smiled reassuringly at him. I wrapped my arms around him a tight hug, he hugged back nearly squeezing all the air out of me.

"Dad, you're crushing me."

He released me, chuckling.

"Heh, sorry kiddo."

He smiled sadly, looking me in the eyes. I feel so bad for leaving him like this, but I have to do this.

"I sure am gonna miss your bear hugs, Dad."

"You don't have to miss them, it's not too late to change schools."

He said in a pleading tone, he was obviously desperately trying to change my mind. I shook my head, putting my hand on his shoulder, assuring him. He looked down, his eyes welling up with tears. I pulled him into a hug once more, he spoke softly, his voice croaked.

"I'm not going to change your mind, am I?"

I sighed.

"No. You know I have to go back.."

I paused, choosing my next words carefully.

"Plus, I heard the schools there are way better, anyways.. I just.. I want to get to know Mom better. I want to know where she grew up.. where she went to school. I need to do this Dad."

He let out a sigh, finally hugging me back. We hugged in silence, embracing each other for what may be the last time in a while. He released me.

"Well.. I guess I better let 'cha get going now. Do you have everything you need? Snacks, toothbrush, purse, ..girl things?"

I chuckled.

"Yes Dad, I have all my girl things. You worry too much!"

"Maybe not enough.."

He mumbled, crossing his arms. I checked my watch, the time was 2:30PM.

"I better head out quick if I want to avoid the rush hour."

I walked to my Jeep, opening the door and putting the keys in the ignition. I turned the keys in the ignition, the familiar rumble the engine reassuring me. Just as I was about to slam the door shut, my dad called out to me.

"Y/n! I.."

I gave him an inquisitive look, leaning my head out the car.

"I love you."

I smiled, grateful for having such a caring dad. I called back,

"I love you too, Dad."

I slammed the car door shut, pulling out of the driveway. I waved goodbye to him, catching a glimpse of his worried smile. He'll be alright. I reassured myself. I turned on the radio, tuning into my favorite station. I tapped my hands on the wheel to the beat of the song as I turned out of my neighborhood, on the road to the freeway.
