"Hello?"

I took a step into the darkness. The house creaked and groaned around me, muffled under the beat of my heart. I glowed under the sun-sliced hall.

"Umma?" I called.

My echo answered back. I looked down the long corridor. Whispers echoed beneath my feet. The blackness was so still.

"Hello? Hey!" I called.

The house hacked and cried.

I took a step down the hallway.

Breathe.

"Hello?"

The sunlight flickered. Gold gashes bloomed on my skin.

I took another step.

My spine crawled, each vertebrae turning over in its place. Everything groaned, quieted, groaned, quieted, screamed without screaming. Quiet/nothing.

The hallway grew darker.

"Hello!"

"Hello!"

"Hello!"

A hand curled around my shoulder.

"Angel."

"Hana.

"Tul.

"Set.

"Net.

"Daseot.

"Yeoseot.

"Ilgop.

"Yeodeol."

I sank back, my eight fingers splayed before me. Water, like ice and magma, engulfed me. I closed my eyes as my lungs began to fill. Bloody waters, shark-infested; a blood-letting gone wrong.

The house said:

Count down

Say it aloud

I raised my hand, all fingers down, each lifting one by one.

"Hana.

"Tul.

"Set.

"Net.

"Daseot.

"Yeoseot.

"Ilgop.

"Yeodeol.

"Ahop."

My hands dropped. My eyes would not open.

The house said:

Wake up.

It was beautiful, without a doubt.

Ocean-soaked winds and sand-riddled air caked the countryside like a world saturated with summer. The open deck let in the sunlight that soaked the great, long windows of the house. Cream-colored, blue accents. June trim, haunted smiles.
