COACH JOON WARNED chaerim to sit on the bench and stop putting her health at jeopardy, but she didn't want to. she wanted to practice again. it hadn't even been a full week of rest yet, but chaerim was too in love with the sport to stay away.
"please?" she bat her eyes, giving coach joon the puppy-eyes treatment.
pursing his lips, coach joon sighed deeply, "alright. but don't overdo it. if you get hurt, i am going to be livid. are we clear?"
"crystal clear!" she replied with a certain peppiness.
the boys smiled and clapped as chaerim walked over to the middle of the field to join practice. seonghwa rolled his eyes, frowning upon this. it was good to see he was back to his old self, too.
"lunges!" seonghwa commanded, so all the boys began doing their leg stretches as told. they did lots of stretching since it was crucial that no more players hurt themselves.
although chaerim had done these stretches millions of times before, she was feeling extra weak. it was like all of the energy in her body had been sucked out of her. in the middle of their 'high knees' stretch which involved jogging while hiking up their knees, chaerim was winded and felt a sharp headache oncoming.
she felt horrible and hated that she had to stop right then and there. chaerim sat on the grass as everyone passed by, resting her head on her hands. she didn't know if she was going to pass out or not, but her vision was blurring and dimming.
of course, her closest teammates noticed and ran to her right away.
"chaerim!! let's take her to the bench, she might faint," suggested yeosang. san and wooyoung nodded.
san tried to pick her up alone, but struggled. in his defense, soccer was more about leg strength than arms. "help me pick her up. i'll grab her legs."
the three awkwardly tried to grab her gently but also pick her up and it wasn't working well. the rocky motions were starting to make chaerim feel even worse.
"god, you three are embarrassing. move over."
the three stooges looked blank. their captain had arrived like a knight in shining armor. they backed up and watched as seonghwa easily picked chaerim up.
her head rested on his shoulder and she said nothing. seonghwa was looking straight ahead as he walked, but for a moment he glanced at chaerim's soft features.
"you're so stupid, you know that?" he told her. she hummed along like she heard it a million times before, "mhm. hey, you're really bad at this contract thing. there you go breaking clause four again." she said in a strained voice. he rolled his eyes.
seonghwa set her down on the grass beside the bench so that she could lean on the cooler as a support. it was also nice that she could be in the shade.
hands on his hips menacingly, seonghwa demanded, "just rest for once, kim." he grabbed a water bottle for her and opened it before handing it to her.
"but," she said, "how am i going to be able to surpass you by resting?"
he just laughed, "you can't anyways, so don't work yourself to death. just drink that water, okay? i have to get back to practice so i can keep surpassing you. no buts."
"alright. come back and verbally abuse me soon, though," she said as a joke. or was it.
he just did his signature scoff and walked off. typical hwa. and as she sat on the grass, she hoped he'd never change. after all, she sort of liked the way they treated each other. their whole enemy dynamic was... fun? she never got bored of him, though sometimes he was a complete pain in the ass. but not always.

when chaerim returned home that day, her mom ran to the door to greet her. as always, she had prepared a fruit tray for her, but it had been sitting out a while since mrs. kim expected chaerim to come home earlier than she had.
"chaerim, did you practice today?" her mother held her shoulders and examined her. her hair was slightly matted to her face from sweat and her cheeks were red, "i told you not to work so hard when you haven't healed fully! it's dangerous."
chaerim just chuckled and said, "i didn't work myself too hard. don't worry, mom."
they sat down on the couch. her mom asked, "ah, was it that mean captain of yours? did he tell you that you had to practice even though you're injured?"
chaerim raised a brow as she thought about it, "hm, seonghwa? no, he's actually quite nice to me now."
"huh? just the other day you called him an ass and a jerk..." mrs. kim was wondering if she was just old and she was making up things at this point, "wait are we talking about the same person?"
"yeah!" chaerim giggled, "i mean, he's still an ass and a jerk, but he's nice. i like him... i think."
chaerim stood up, grabbing her backpack once again while mrs. kim still sat their wondering what her words meant.
"alright, i'm gonna go shower now!"
chaerim skipped off to her room cheerfully.
"a nice ass...? ah, i don't understand kids these days," her mom said to herself.
taejoon, who had just walked into the living room, spoke up, "ew mom. why are you talking about kids and their nice asses? gross!"
"no—! i wasn't— i was," she sighed, "nevermind."
