( 19 ) the twilight zone

NEEDLESS TO SAY, seonghwa and chaerim acted a whole lot different at soccer practice ever since they started dating. i mean, they were attached at the hip and couldn't go five seconds without sending winky eyes and kissy lips to each other across the field.

it definitely didn't go unnoticed by their teammates, either. as they all paused for a water break, the whole team excluding the couple gathered in a bunch and observed them.

"hah, seonghwa and chaerim are finally getting along! woah, they're really getting along." jake narrated, almost grimacing, "okay wow, pda!!!"

jungwon covered his eyes and the rest of the boys squealed like kids as seonghwa kissed chaerim's cheek. they were seriously in their own little world.

wooyoung told the team, "you guys didn't know they started dating? well, that should go without saying now... just look at them."

it was like watching a k-drama. chaerim pushed his chest, and he pushed her arm. they flirted like two innocent kids in love, just enjoying each other's presence.

"yuck!" jungwon groaned. and when chaerim left seonghwa's side for the first time in forever to grab another hair tie, wooyoung ran up to her.

"last time i checked, you two were at each other's throats. how come you're being so... cringey with him now! it's gross! i can't get used to it." wooyoung pouted, and jungwon agreed.

chaerim giggled. you could tell she was in an impeccable mood, "life is strange, isn't it?" she then started to hum a tune as she left the locker room to go to seonghwa's car, as he drove her home every day now.

"this is the twilight zone. i know it. i saw this in a movie once," wooyoung said to jungwon, staring off into space worriedly.

jungwon grabbed his arm and whimpered, "what happened in the movie?"

wide-eyed, wooyoung turned to the younger and chanted, "we're all going to die!!!"

"mom? dad? taejoon?" chaerim called out cheerfully as she squeaked open the front door that day, "i'm home! and i brought a guest, if that's okay,"

she giggled and turned around to smile at seonghwa. it had been a few days of them dating, and chaerim was excited to introduce seonghwa to them. she was a little worried, since she used to complain about him to them all the time, but she now wanted to show them all of the good things about seonghwa.

she was head over her heels for him.

upon hearing about a 'guest', both her mom and taejoon bolted towards the door. they both gasped, recognizing his face, but kept their composure.

"mom, taejoon, this is seonghwa!" chaerim smiled proudly.

"oh! hello, sweetheart. you're chaerim's soccer captain, right? i'm chaerim's mom, you can call me yerim. make yourself at home, please." she bowed, so seonghwa followed suit.

"i'm taejoon. nice to finally meet you, we've heard so much about you." he nodded, then shot a wink to chaerim, who rolled her eyes.

chaerim turned to face them fully and took a deep breath, "seonghwa is... my boyfriend!"

the two nearly choked on air. chaerim's mom smiled, "wow! that's wonderful. you're a very handsome boy. but um... why don't we get to know you better over some tea?"

as they walked to the kitchen, taejoon kicked chaerim's leg, "hey! how'd you get a boyfriend? did you finally learn how to dress? i could've sworn last night you were wearing that hello kitty nightgown that goes down to your knees last night—" he was promptly smacked on his arm to be shut up.

so, the four gathered around the dining table with piping hot oolong teas.

"chaerim's dad is working late tonight, but maybe next time you come, you can meet him!" said mrs. kim smiled.

"yeah, i'd love to meet him! but for now, it's really nice to meet you two. thanks for welcoming me into your home," seonghwa said politely. it made chaerim smile, this new gentlemanly side of him she was learning.

"of course! come over anytime," mrs. kim assured him, and taejoon added, "yeah. it's nice to have another guy around."

mrs. kim had a look like a lightbulb popped above her head, "say, while you're here, do you wanna see chaerim's embarrassing videos of when she was younger? they're so funny and so cute!"

"oh, that's not— he probably won't want to see those!" chaerim laughed awkwardly.

but, as to be expected, seonghwa grinned evilly, "i thought you'd never ask!"

chaerim squeezed her eyes shut and prepared to get embarrassed as taejoon giggled. all in all, it made for a fun memory. seonghwa fit in just right with her family.

later that night after seonghwa had left, chaerim laid in her bed, feeling all giddy. she had a huge smile on her face because for some reason, every video she watched on her phone was hilarious.

suddenly, taejoon knocked on her door frame three times. she looked up, "mhm?"

he smiled and opened up his hand, "remember my bet about dating seonghwa? well, pay up! 5,000₩!!!"

"ugh. i totally forgot about that."
