(FINAL A/N!! I've decided to do an A/n at the beginning of the chapter this time, as it doesn't feel right to end either of the next two chapters on an A/n. This writing journey has been incredible, and I thank each and every one of you that's made it this far into the book for sticking with me. I love you all.
And with that, enjoy the final chapters of See You On The Other Side.)
Sky POV
TW: Weapons, Gore, Blood, Death
"Where are we?" I call out. The room Eret and I are trapped in seems to be empty except for the two of us, and there's a window three quarters of the way up the wall. However, the wall is around forty feet tall.
"I have no clue," Eret tells me. "It looks like a dungeon of some sort."
"Well, you're right about that," a new voice calls out. A very familiar one, at that.
"Niki?" I ask, glancing over at the door where she's just entered from. "They told us you were dead! How are you here?"
"Oh, so that's the excuse they used," she laughs. "They told you I was dead? And they actually kept up with the lie? Wow, I didn't know that palace guards could be so good at acting."
"I don't mean to be rude or anything," Eret starts, "But what the fuck is going on?"
Niki smiles, hoisting her ax over her shoulder. "I turned you in, of course," she laughs. "It was simple, really. Give the guard my pin and sit back and watch from there!"
"So the others. . . are they really dead? Or just traitors?" I ask.
"Oh, they're dead," she says. "Sorry to break it to you, but your little revolution is coming to an end. I'll go get the king now." Niki turns to the door, dragging her ax behind her.
"Wait," Eret says. "Why? Why did you do it? We were friends, Niki. Good friends, at that."
"Sorry to break it to you, but some of us aren't as fortunate as you are," she starts off. "My jewelry shop? It was a good business, but it never provided enough for me to live off of. Your father offered me a place on the council," she says pointedly, looking at Eret.
"Fuck you," they say simply, watching as she walks out the door.
"What are we going to do?" I ask. "What's even going to happen to us? What does your dad want?"
"I don't know," Eret says shakily, opening his arms to me as I crawl closer to them. "We'll be okay. We'll be okay."
She says it like a prayer, like it's the only thing we have left to hold on to other than each other. We sway back and forth slightly, his hands combing through my hair to calm me down. "It's okay," they whisper.
He presses their lips to mine softly, and I hold onto him like it's the only thing keeping me alive. Both of his arms wrap around my waist while both of my hands go into his hair, tilting his head down so her lips meet mine. I don't want this moment to end; I want to stay here forever. With Eret. Just the two of us.
They pull away, resting their forehead on mine. "I'm going to protect you," he promises. "Forever. I won't let anything happen to you."
I smile sadly. "Thank you."
We sit in silence for a few moments before the door bursts open, a man standing fuming in the doorway. As I come face to face with the person, I can already tell who it is from their outfit, the stern look on their face, and the powerful demeanor they hold. I'm currently standing in front of Eret's dad, the king of Lylesburg.
