(tris)

eric and i shuffle our way past the rest of the dauntless members.

"where should we run to?" he asks.

i see a clearing with a tall, abandoned building in the center of it.

"there," i say, "we can hide, and that way the other team may not even find us."

"you're brilliant, you know?" he laughs and then forms a small smile.

he seems so different with me, i don't quite understand it.

why be nice to one person, and hate the rest of the world?

"i know i am" i say back.

i see four out of the corner of my eye.

he's watching me. eyes locked and focused.

he's jealous... but, he'd never admit it.

he notices me glancing at him and turns away.

"tris?" eric calls as he begins his ascent up a flight of stairs towards the entrance to the abandoned building.

"yes?" i ask.

"are you okay?"

"why wouldn't i be?" i say, confidently.

truth is, i'm not okay in the slightest.

dauntless territory is one that is uncertain, it's like i'm floating in the air and could drop to the ground at any time.

before we headed to begin the game, i was speaking with christina.

she said to me, "tris, never be afraid of anyone. even if you're smaller than they are, you're definitely faster, use that to your advantage."

i ponder those words for a moment.

christina is like a brick wall, sturdy, and unshaken by anything thrown its way.

i strive to have the confidence that she does one day.

i finally reach the stairs where eric had called out to me only minutes ago.

he has to know that i can't keep up, so it's likely that he'll leave me behind if it came down to it.

he wouldn't let his reputation as a high-ranking member of dauntless get destroyed for someone who isn't even a full-fledged member yet.

i kinda wish he would leave me behind, it would prove that i can handle the pressure of being on my own.

four would be delighted to see me struggle, and he may even laugh at me.

no matter what, i have to push myself during this training. i have to. otherwise, my future is uncertain.

i climb the stairs and enter the building.

i scan around the room to see where eric had disappeared to.

no sign of him. although, there are tons of spider webs.

it's clear no one has been inside this building for months now.

"eric, where are you?" i call out in the darkness, my voice echoing off the walls.

no reply.

did he already get captured by another team? did someone else know we were coming here?

"eric? answer me. it's tris."

a shadow comes creeping around the corner, and i freeze for a split second.
