It was the first time she'd been in an interrogation room that actually looked like the ones they had in CSI and shows like that. A steel table, steel chair, two-way mirror. Infield checked off the list in her head again.
Unsworth's tablet to the media
Myers' phone and car with the police
There was only Mahlia to go. Get her. Get Rowan and get the hell away from here. The war was over. She'd won.
Maybe feel good about it later...
The door opened. Phillip Robert Hill. He closed the door behind him. Shot her a glance over his shoulder. His face was sweaty. He looked grim.
In on it...
Infield's fingers tensed and her nails scratched the stainless-steel surface of the table. The AFP had brought those children and drugs over from North Africa. Maybe even helped try to fly a plane into the MCG on Grand Final Day.
He moved over and eased his bulk into the seat opposite her. Infield felt heat radiate off her skin. The tension was thick enough to chew on. This was one of the guys she'd been after. Out to expose. Now she had a minute alone with him. He sat there with his hands on the table and twiddled his thumbs. Watched them as he did it. Finally his watery green eyes looked up at her again. He took a breath.
'What do you know?' he asked.
A smile crept across Infield's lips.
'I know those two men who tried to fly the plane into the MCG weren't even pilots,' she said. 'I know they weren't flying the plane. Which meant the plane was following a predetermined flight path. Which meant that the attempted attack was an inside job and not the Islamic terrorist attempt the news said it was. I know the responding SOGs executed the two men. While I was trying to interrogate them. So I can only assume the Victoria Police knew about something. Or someone in there did. I know that those two men were fathers of two girls who were kidnapped were brought into Australia. And that the people responsible were obviously responsible - and knew something - about the plane and the MCG. I know that Byron Unsworth was running a portion of the Chinese-owned wharf and that trafficked children and drugs were coming through there. I know that the news reported that that the two African men were Ugandan terrorists. It said they'd come to Australia through China. I know that wasn't true. They'd come as diplomats. I know that the news is saying that I'm just trying to frame Nathan Myers for his part in this because I'm some kind of operative working for either China or for some Islamic terrorist group. But that doesn't explain why you look like death warmed up, Mister Hill - Super Hill. I know you're wondering what's going to be found on Cain's tablet and in Myers' internet, message, and call history. Which means not everyone is corrupt. And - even if they are - the media will know what's on there too. Prime Minister Sutton will know about an attempted attack on his constituents and if he's in on it then the opposition will know, and they will go public. I know that every-little-one in on this little game should be very afraid of what's going to happen now.'
Hill stared. Right at her. Though her. It eroded the confidence of her rehearsed speech even as it continued to flow out of her mouth. What escape plan could he possibly have?
He smiled. Infield's fingers curled even tighter.
'I don't think you know much, Darrian Infield,' Hill said. 'Not much at all.'
'I want to speak to Eric Bayley,' Infield said.
'You can speak to whoever you want,' Hill said. 'I'll go get him. But he'll be expecting a full confession. You averted an attack on the MCG by Boko Harem. You realized your mistake, Boko Harem being your allies. You attempted to protect the two men from justice. Fortunately the Victoria Police got around you. You then escaped justice at home and colluded with Ugandan authorities to frame respected Australians by moving children and drugs trafficked by African gangs into the United Patriots Yard. You murder government employees. You did. You don't know anything at all.'
