Athena lurked in the shadows; her piercing gaze fixed on the newborns she controlled. The moment one strayed beyond the perimeter she had drawn, she struck without hesitation, ending them swiftly. Somehow, the act of hunting and killing helped release the storm of anger raging inside her.
Her hair remained blonde, but the weather around her betrayed her true emotions. The sky churned violently, mirroring the turmoil in her heart. She never expected to share her past with anyone, never wanted to. It was a story she buried deep, a collection of memories that only brought her guilt.
Even as she embraced her nature as a witch, the weight of her past clung to her. It was her fault. The death of her twins. Their mother. She could never erase the blood on her hands. Emma's sudden appearance had only made it worse, unearthing memories she had spent lifetimes trying to forget. She wasn't to blame, Athena knew that logically. But knowing didn't stop the anger from consuming her.
The storm surged, the winds howling louder. Rain lashed against the earth, uncontrolled. Crimson lightning slashed through the sky.
Athena hunted through the night; each kill an attempt to calm the raging tempest within her. But it wasn't enough. It was never enough.
By morning, her phone buzzed incessantly, calls and messages from the Cullens. Graduation. A party. Their naive attempts at normalcy. But she wasn't going back. They needed to understand that. Carlisle, especially, needed to wake up and take responsibility for his own decisions.
At midday, a vision struck her, Riley. Looking for her.
A smirk tugged at her lips. Perfect.
She made her way toward the docks, tracking him with ease. On the way, she stopped to buy a disposable cellphone, for him.
When she finally reached him, she positioned herself behind him, silent. The waves crashed against the wood, filling the silence between them. She had already read his mind, already knew his choice. She simply waited, giving him the space to come to his own conclusion.
After a long moment, Riley finally turned, his expression tense but resolved.
-I want to take your offer.
He met her gaze—and faltered. For a moment, he was speechless. Athena stood before him, ethereal and powerful, her beauty undeniable. But it was her eyes that caught him the most. They held an exhaustion deeper than anything he had ever seen. A tiredness that spoke of lifetimes of war, pain, and relentless survival.
And yet, even with that weight, she remained standing.
-Are you sure about this? -Athena asked, her gaze sharp as she studied Riley.
