Asami was riding shotgun with her hair undone in the front seat of the car. Korra was driving again today, and Asami was pleased to say that she'd improved tenfold since the first time Asami tried to teach her. Then again, that wasn't saying much. Asami laughed to herself, glancing at Korra out of the corner of her eye. Korra was looking right back at her in the same manner.
"Eyes on the road, Korra, not on me," Asami teased. "We don't want another metalbending incident." This, of course, referred to one of the other times Asami tried to teach Korra to drive and it ended in them getting into a slight fender-bender with another vehicle.
"I've gotten the hang of this," Korra replied, confident and cocky as ever, voicing Asami's thoughts as if she'd read the other woman's mind. Korra only had one hand on the steering wheel this time, the other was quick to snake over to Asami. Asami's heart twisted and thumped in her chest.
Suddenly flustered, she looked around as if trying to find a distraction, or an answer. Barely even aware of it, she turned the car radio down.
"Is something wrong?" Korra asked.
"Nothing!" Asami was quick to try to deny her feelings, but Korra, although headstrong and brash, was certainly not stupid. She raised an eyebrow, a silent expression of disbelief. Asami was quick to come up with an excuse. "I was just thinking how we don't have a song."
Korra raised both eyebrows now, surprised that this was what seemed to have worried Asami. A second later, though, she came up with an answer. She may not typically have been the "smart one", or the thinker, but she had her moments.
"Our song is the sliding screen door, sneaking out late, tapping on your window. It's when we're on the phone and you talk real slow, 'cause it's late and your father don't know!" she cried, then she and Asami shared a laugh.
"I swear, Korra, I will never know where you come up with this stuff!" Asami chuckled.
"Maybe it's all part and parcel of being the Avatar? I guess I'm a word-bender, too!" Korra joked and Asami laughed again, rolling her eyes just a little. They settled into a peaceful silence after that, Asami seemingly placated and comforted by Korra's answer.
Now, though, it was Korra's turn to suddenly look away. The truth was, it wasn't just her natural wittiness or mad skill with words that made her so quick to reply to Asami's earlier question. This was a topic that had been on her mind lately, too...
Our song is the way you laugh! On the first date, I was thinking, "Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have..."
Then when they got home, before they went and turned in, they both hoped that they could hear it again.
ooo
The next day, Korra found herself walking up the front porch steps tiredly after everything that had happened. The spring in her step was absent and her shoulders were hunched. She had a defeated, deadpan expression instead of a chipper, confident smile. It felt like everything had gone all wrong and that she and her best-laid plans had been completely trampled on, lost, and thrown away.
Training hadn't gone quite as well as she hoped, the Equalists were still a problem, she could sense some remaining tension between herself, Mako, and Asami, and speaking of Asami, she hadn't even been around that day! Granted, Korra couldn't blame her, since she had a company to run and everything, but still! Korra missed her...
She finally got to the hallway where her room was, well on her way to her ever-loving bed. She almost didn't notice all the red and blue roses tied with a string attached to a note that read, "Our song is the sliding screen door, sneaking out late, tapping on your window. It's when we're on the phone and you talk real slow, 'cause it's late and your best friends don't know!"
To say that this surprise gift brightened Korra's day (or night, rather) was an understatement. Good old Asami, always coming through for her even when she couldn't be around! Maybe the roses were a small gift, and maybe it still wasn't as good as seeing Asami in person, but Korra was quick to use her water and earthbending skills to give the roses somewhere safe to stay. They were just as beautiful as the woman who sent them, and Korra certainly wasn't blind to the very intentional color choice.
She went to bed with a smile on her face, little knowing that Asami was thinking of her right at that moment. Of course, she hadn't been able to send the roses personally, but being a part of a megacorporation meant there was no shortage of assistants and errand-runners. It was her only regret that she couldn't be there to see Korra's reaction once Korra got the roses. But, she could certainly imagine how wide Korra's smile probably was. Maybe she'd even laughed in delight, or amusement, at the overly sappy and romantic gesture. To know that would've made Asami's night.
Our song is the way you laugh! Our last date, I was thinking, "Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have..." And when she got home, as she and Korra both turned on in, they only hoped that they could hear it again.
ooo
Asami was certain she'd listened to every album in existence. Well, maybe not every album, but as a powerful member of a corporation that dabbled in all sorts of technology and attended all sorts of large, fancy, public events, there was certainly no shortage of music in her life. At the same time as she woke up to the sound of her alarm clock, Korra was miles away, waking up to the sound of the radio. It was far less obnoxious, but as she went through her morning routine with the music playing in the background the whole time, she couldn't help but realize something. Little did she know, Asami was thinking the same thing: "Nothing has ever come along that was as good as our song..."
Later that day, though, Korra did get to hear something good.
"Hey, Korra." A phone call from Asami.
"Hi, Asami! What's up?"
"I was just wondering if you wanted to go out to lunch with me later today."
"Aren't you really busy, though? I thought you mentioned having multiple meetings to attend."
Korra's train of thought was interrupted by someone tapping on her window. She looked over her shoulder, then her eyes and mouth went comically wide. Waving at her cheerfully from the other side was...
"ASAMI?!"
"The workers don't know!" Asami smug little smile said it all and Korra couldn't help but laugh and shake her head at Asami's audacity.
Before either of them knew it, they were speeding down the road in Asami's Satomobile. Korra was driving again, getting better and better each time. As they scouted out a place to eat, their minds ran a similar track once again. A new date, and I swear I'll kiss her like I should have! Right before they could settle on a restaurant, though, Asami grabbed a pen and an old napkin and she wrote their song.
AN: Written for my best buddy, Snorlax891! Hope you enjoy, and for a second time: What can I say except, YOU'RE WELCOME?!
